Just a few general questions.

I am applying to UC’s and I have a couple of questions.

Do honor classes give you one extra point like AP and IB?

What does first-generation mean?

Would you count as the first generation to go to college if your parents went to college in another country?

Do UC’s take the highest score of each section of the SAT? For example, if one gets m 800, cr 200, w 800 (1800) in March and m 700, cr 800, w 800 (2300) in december, do UC’s calculate that as a 2400?

What does impacted major mean and how does it affect applicants?

How do UC’s check one’s EC’s? For example, how do they know that you are a member of the club if the club doesn’t maintain a list of members?

What happens if one lies on the UC application? (Just wondering, not attempting.)

I might have other questions too. :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks in advance.

Hi Beastmaster

UCs take the highest SAT score in one sitting, so either the 1800 score in March or the 2300 in December.

I believe honors count for an extra point like AP.

First Generation means your parents didn't complete college and you will be the first one.

I'll let others answer your other questions.

Good luck!

They dont check your EC. They believe you. However if they find something that is inconsistent they will check up with your school. And if caught it is instant rejection.

Thanks for the replies.
So I have a few more questions: :P

Thus, it can be inferred that clubs don't count as much of EC's since you can create a club and give yourself an astronomical number of service hours?

I have never heard of colleges contacting club leaders for information on members. Has anyone heard anything like that?

Does first semester senior grades matter? If it does, what's the threshold for GPA after acceptance?

Thanks. :)

The boards are too flooded.
bump

beastmaster - You can only add an extra point on AP/honors classes in certain core courses, and you can only add up to 8 semesters (8 extra points) total. The UC website explains exactly which courses count.

If your parents went to college anywhere, you are not considered a first generation student.

Senior grades are not calculated into the gpa, but if you drop too much, they may recind your admission. You need to submit grades at the end of the year. (D's can easily cause them to recind.) I think you need to maintain a 3.0, but I'm not sure.

Impacted majors are those that are very hard to get into because they are oversubscribed - such as engineering at Berkeley. You will need higher stats to get in, if you can get in at all.

The UCs generally trust what you put down for ECs but they do have a random spot check every so many applications. In these cases, they will ask the applicant to provide verification of their ECs.

Thanks for your reply.
I have a few more questions ;) as I've just come across a point system review thing for UC's.
This link is specifically for UC San Diego.

http://henry.sandi.net/college/application/ucsd_application_scoring.htm
So here are my questions:

For 33+ extra a-g courses, one can get 250-500 points. How is this possible? The UC minimum a-g requirement is 30, so to get these points, one has to take 63+ semesters of a-g courses in 4 years. That is about 8 a-g courses every year. The maximum number of classes each year is 7, how can anyone even do this?

Is the low family income threshold of $60,000 before or after tax?

Are the roles listed after "2 or minor roles" the only that are applicable?

Do competitions in language proficiency count under awards? What about Boy Scout awards from Camporees? And completion of outside academic programs such as Japanese School?

What does 'commercial and school test preparation courses' mean under Enrichment programs?

Under special circumstance/personal challenges, does the failing health of an immediate family member count? What about immigration and having to learn a new language from scratch?

Under special circumstance/personal challenges, what would count as a personal involvement in life trauma?

Thanks for bearing with me. Yes, I know I have a lot of questions. :P
Thanks again.

Blah, its on the 5th page already.
