Just A Few Questions

I know a lot of you posting were a little taken aback by the last $h^tstorm I created by being impolite to a fellow forum member. For that I apologize. But trust me, i've put in my time at high school. Worked like h ell to get accepted, and am not just some arrogant punk who thinks he knows it all. I congratulate everyone whos gotten in and give my best wishes to everyone still waiting.

I do however have a few questions if anyone feels like answering it would be much appreciated.

I've been looking for a detailed schedule of Beast Barracks. If anyone had seen one I would greatly appreciate the link. Could not find it on any google search. Just want to know what hopefully lies ahead.

"A modern requirement: no tattoos or brands on the face, neck or head. No tattoos prejudicial to good order and discipline anywhere. On R-Day, all existing tattoos, brands and body modifications will be documented. Additions to same while a cadet is grounds for dismissal."

I always wanted to get an Army tattoo and I always have understood that meant nothing on the hands and neck. But can you still not get any tattoos while you are a cadet? I wasn't planning on putting something ridiculous on or anything, just a small USMA after I had been in a few years, then Class of hopefully 2010 When i graduated. Am i going to have to wait until I'm commissioned?

I'm sure someones gonna be smart and tell me there are more important things to worry about like making it through, but trust me I'm already doing everything in my power at this point, just was curious.

Once again, sorry to who I offended, Hooah, Oorah, Hooya, whatever you prefer.

Respectfully,

Mumford

I actually talked to cadets about this. Technically you are told not to get any tattoos during your time at West Point, however there aren't "tattoo checks" for them to find out.

Pictures are worth a thousand words. These are links to pix of R-Day and Beast. Enjoy!

Read "Absolutely American" if you haven't done so...gives a good rundown on beast. OORAH! Just kidding...

Boss, you are so baaaad!

Yea, I've read it a few times. Maybe its worth another look.

mumford:

To see the specifics of the Cadet Basic Training, go to the academy's department of military instruction webpage and check out the presentations.
They will give you a pretty good idea of the types of military training you will have during Beast Barracks. Here's the link: http://www.usma.edu/dmi

For some reason, I remember thinking that Absolutely American wasn't all that detailed. BUT, it has been awhile since I've read it. Anyways, Beast I and Beast II differ very much. Here's the best that I can give you.

Beast I is all about learning how to do the simple things. R-Day is spent getting a bunch of basic stuff. You'll walk into your room that first day and just stand there in total shock. When I first got to my room, no one told me to sit down, so I stood there at Parade Rest for about half an hour. You'll have so much crap that you have no idea what to do with or what it does or where it goes. They'll give you a manual of how to set things up, but the manual sucks. There's so much it DOESN'T tell you. As R-Day gets closer for you guys, I'll try to tell you as much as possible to help out, as well as stuff to bring. Anyways, after R-Day, you'll spend all of your time getting issued equipment and clothing and learning how to put it together. That, interspersed with a BILLION classes on sexual harrassment, the Honor Code, etc. You'll spend a vast amount of hours sitting in Rob Aud listening to some incredibly boring briefing. Everyone will want to fall asleep, but the upperclass will be lurking everywhere, much like sharks. You'll want to write letters home, because that's the only enjoyable thing you CAN do. You'll have almost no time to do it, either. Any time you're anywhere waiting in line (which you'll be doing for hours at a time), you'll be studying knowledge. You will never, ever stop studying knowledge. Here's a basic day during Beast 1. I can't remember the exact times for breakfast and all that, but you'll get a general idea.

Wakeup: 0520
PT: 0535-0700
Breakfast: 0720
Most of the day: Briefings and issue points
Lunch
Afternoon: More PT or Mass Sports (about 1.5 weeks in you’ll start mass sports)
Dinner
Squad Leader time: (teaching how to shine shoes, putting room together, putting LCE together)
New Cadet Time: 2130-2200 (this is the time when you’ll shower, shine your shoes, clean your room)
2200: Lights out

That’s Beast I, essentially. You’ll go on 3 or 4 ruck marches—two 2 milers, one 3 miler, and then the 6 mile. The 6 mile is quite possibly the worst of all the ruck marches. It goes almost straight up the ski slope. I did NOT think I’d make it. Besides the ruck marches, pretty much the only other military stuff you’ll be doing during Beast I is IMT (individual movement techniques). That’s where you get to do all the crawling under barbed wire, throwing grenades, etc. It’s pretty fun. I'll continue the part about Beast II in my next post.

Bet all you guys can't wait for those LOA's...jk...thanks for a great breakdown.

Thanks, awesome post. Just the kind of answer i was looking for.

wow, I didn't think I wanted to go anymore than I already do! good post!

marines4me - you're a great source of info since you're living it. Kudos to you for taking time to help the others! Priceless information to them at this point.

Mumford - you're gonna make it through beast great cause you're scrappy as ~~~!!! HA! Just don't be throwing grenades anywhere in the southerly directions please. Have you gotten your LOA framed yet? Better do it now cause they'll be no time later. Now, stay un-hurt, no speeding tickets, and run run run. And run some more. And RELAX! They'll be none of that later. Congrats! You've just been adopted by an academy cybermom. There's a few more on here so look out for more mom advice. I'm possitive you're gonna get the bubble tape lecture soon.

Well i'll be sure not to get into any trouble, well i wont get caught doing anything stupid. And no, i'm not getting my LOA framed, its just on the fridge next my finger paintings and popsicle stick art.

Jk of course

Thanks to marines4me for that detailed post. Its great to have people stay on this site after they get to west point, I am positive I will. Anyway, I framed my loa, its right above my bed with a West Point patch in the corner. I waited so long for an loa, framing it was the least i could do.

To answer the original question, my sls leader told us there are tattoo checks. He told us you have to stand naked in front of everyone while they search...im not kidding. Plus he said they check firstie year. A person in my squad was nervous cause he had a huge tattoo on his head...(the top under the hair).

My sister is cadet, you are told not to get a tattoo but you can you just have to walk hours for getting them.

I'll take hours if its a good tattoo, i'd be curious to hear how many

uuughh..... its hooah. not hooyah or ooorah.

"Duty First" gives a much better description of Beast. There is no detailed schedule for Beast published each year any more for security reasons.

8IzEnuff: please :) don't start that issue again
