What banks are there in ithaca? HSBC, CFCU, http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&q=banks&near=South+Hill,+New+York&fb=1&cd=1&ie=UTF8&ll=42.423837,-76.494198&spn=0.057276,0.11673&z=13&om=1
The ATMs on campus are HSBC, CFCU, and one other one
Best cellphone service? Cingular, because the 850 band cuts into buildings better. assuming your mobile supports 850. T-Mobile works fine outside of buildings, and in some buildings too, but is spotty inside some of the buildings
long distance calling? they just cut the service in the rooms for next fall, most people use their mobile. check out voipbuster.com or internetcalls.com -- you can relay calls to another line, directcall (like the phone in your room), and you only pay to voipbuster because its an incoming call, and incoming calls in your room are free (great for overseas calls.

is ithaca really strict when it comes to people staying overnight?

Not at all. There is virtually no guest policy. The only thing they ask is that you tell your RA so they don't get confused as to why there's a strange person in your hall.

Also, now there are 5 guest meals per semester included in the meal plan, which is good.

the staying over doesnt matter if its during orientation? and just to make sure the most used and best cellphone service is cingular?

thanks birddogger and Sporti2005

throughthewire -- I'm a little confused as to what you're asking. Can you clarify your question about "staying over" a little bit?? If you're looking to have someone stay over with you during orientation, I would suggest against it. They schedule a lot of stuff and it's REALLY REALLY overwhelming, I can't imagine having to entertain someone as well.

Personally, I think that the most used service was Verizon (which I have). Almost all my friends were on Verizon which made it nice because of free IN-Network calling. The service was great all over campus, too.

i asked because my mom doesnt know how many days she will be staying in ithaca so if she cant find a hotel she might have to stay with me. Im international which means i get to ithaca august 19 or 20, before everyone else.

OOOOOOOOOOH that makes way more sense now.

Unless your roommate is already there, there would really be no problem with your mom staying with you. She should be able to find a hotel since it's BEFORE everyone else is moving in, but like I said, her staying with you shouldn't be an issue unless your roomie is already there, in which case you'd have to discuss it with them.
