just a little tiny question about math16b

well, i couldn't sign up for math16a since it was all full...
so i kinda signed up for 16b instead.

can I just skip 16a like this? and if I just take 16b straight, does grad school (meaning-possibly-med school) care? do I have to take 16a and THEN take 16b in order to fulfill my requirement? and another question.. is 16b gonna be too hard for me since i didn't take 16a?
well. I passed AP Calc BC with a 5 if that matters...

I'm just kinda lost here with my math schedule.
somebody pulizzz help a lost frosh with her schedule:(

try math 1a?

If you got a 5 on Calc BC, Math 16B should be a walk in the park. The 16 series is the easy series (relative to 1A & 1B).

I also got a 5 on that exam and I signed up for Math 53. A decision I'll likely regret. I think you'll do fine.

ahh. really? that's a relief..:)

so.. if I take 16b then do I fulfill my math requirement for med school?

if you want to go med-school, they require a year of college calculus. and they want college courses, not AP scores. so if you are pre-med, you should take either 16a & 16b or 1a & 1b, depending on what your major requires. so yes, you need to take the entire series if you are pre-med.

im taking 16b and got a 5 on the bc... im going into haas. its just a gpa boost for me

oh man.. i guess I should take 16b now.. and take 16a next semester or something..lol that would be kinda weird. wait. that's okay, rite?

I dont think you can do that.

About having to take one year of calculus in college for medical schools... What would happen if someone interested in pre-med went straight to Math 1B and didn't take 1A? Would that person have to continue into the Math 53 and 54 series?

16a and 16b are sequential, so if you take 16b now, then you can't take 16a anymore. as for which courses you take, according to one of the mcb groups on campus, you need "2 semesters of calculus-based math". so most people take the 16 or 1 series, regardless of their AP scores...but you could go into 53 or 54 if you wanted. as long as you fulfill that requirement.

math 53 counts as one semester of calculus too, since it's multivariable calculus. so you could do a math 1b-math 53 sequence.

so uh.. i got a 3 on calc BC and i hate math so im taking 16b
somebodys gonna have to help me, haha

you have to take the 1 series to take 53 or 54...if you take the 16 series, you can't go on to higher math. so if you're premed, then taking 16b is kinda like boxing yourself into a corner.

not at all. Many medical schools will take a semester of calculus and a semester of statistics. After 16b, you can take Stat 20 or something. In addition, UCLA requires a semester of statistics.

man. this is kinda confusing... :(
so since "most" medical schools require 1 year of college calculus, I should drop 16B and start from 16A next semester since if I take 16B, then there is nothing else for me to take?... also.. even though BlueElmo said that "Many medical schools will take a semester of calculus and a semester of statistics," note that he/she said "many medical schools" meaning not all the medical schools will do that. So.. I guess I should drop 16B right now and sign up for some other random class and wait until next semester to take 16A:(
I kinda wanted to take math now when my memories are fresh from high school but oh well. better to be safe?

look, you are probably not going to apply to all the medical schools in the country. Since a lot of medical schools accept a semester of calculus and a semester of statistics, I think you should just take 16b now and take stats next semester. Or I guess you could opt for 1a/1b series.

I took Calc AB AP and got a 5 on the test, took Math 16B last spring and it was CAKE! Don't worry about 16a stuff, it's basically a different but yet similar class even though it may seem sequential.
