Does Georgetown compare you to other students who are applying from your school or do they compare you to other applicants from your area? Only one person from my school has applied each year for the last 5 years or so, but two or three people are applying this year. One of the other applicants is a legacy so I'm wondering about the competition.

I think they compare you more from your area than your actual school, but don't stress about it. If you're a strong candidate, regardless of area, they'll accept you.

Gtown like most schools will compare within your school. For example, if you have a 2100 SAT, and that is the highest SAT score at your school it will carry a lot more weight. If you have a 2250, but 10+ people at your school have a higher score it won't carry as much weight. They like to see how you have down given the circumstances. That's why rank and gpa play such a key factor.

It is not so much a comparison of who applies from your school, but more or less a cognizance of your school environment that is taken into consideration. Regional acceptance rates for Georgetown vary widely from under 10% in some areas to over 30% for applicants from other areas of the country. I think rank and GPA have actually declined in importance at Georgetown as opposed to what the grades you received in classes were individually given their rigor of difficulty and their relation to your interest.

The number of applicants from a school really doesn't play that much into consideration--at least from my experience of around 40 applicants to Georgetown from my high school about 22 were accepted...way above the acceptance rate overall. If you are a qualified applicant who is the sort of person with interests that Georgetown is looking to fill in its class--then the Committee on Admissions will take you, regardless.

Ok. Thanks everyone!
