Just a WTH what if chances....

School: Public Magnet High School

SAT Score: 2400/2400
ACT: 36/36
GPA: 3.0 UW, 4.0 W

AP Courses:

12-16(random ones) 5/5 in every single one

ECs: NONE

What about:

School: Public Magnet High School
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Hispanic/African American
SAT Score: 2100/2400
ACT: 30/36
GPA: 3.3-3.4UW, 4.3-4.4 W

AP Courses:

10-12

4/5 in half, 3/5 in one, and 5/5 in the rest.

ECs:

A few.

2yrs in swimming
2 yrs in lets say band.
2yrs in Student Government
2 yrs in helping something interesting as community service

Which student would have a better chance?

These are 2 types of people as we can tell. One is a hard working involved type while the other is a smart kept to himself type. I am truly wondering whether top institutions value intelligence over involvement or involvement and hard work over intelligence. The top candidate is easily smarter than the lower candidate but the lower candidate struggles to keep everything together while the other just seems lazy with an ability to clearly do much more than the second one.

depends on what college your looking into. Probably the second student looks better because the higher you score gpa wise the lower your SAT can be. Plus second student has ec's.

i would say the first student.
ECs don't matter all that much, unless you are in some national competition or whatever

I hate to burst your bubble but according to the princeton review book "Cracking the NEw SAT" they said that at liberal art colleges they count 50%. At regular state universities they count 20-25% (judging from the pie graph)

Princeton Review should not be trusted. They said SAT is worth 25%, but I say that is bs. From this entire forum, I feel that SATs are hardly worth a thing to HYPMS and other brandname colleges.

Well there is a reason why most colleges publish a mid range of accepted SAT scores, they still look at those. Personally I think SAT scores are the easiest indicators of whether you're an underachiever. You know, low grades but high SAT's. Colleges hate lazy people.
