DS is excited to hear he’s accepted at Amherst, but does anyone know when/how we’ll hear about a financial aid package? Not that we’re complaining about the good news, of course, but the financial aid is critical to his decision, so it would be nice to know soon…

Sorry to not be helpful… but I thought D was daughter and S was son… What is DS?? Unless your nintendo applied to college…

I think DS means “dear son.”

Supportivemom1…I was acepted to Amherst ED. My acceptance letter arrived Dec 15 and my financial aid package arrived about 20 days later. My guess is you will hear something in about 10 days because school and families are now on a time crunch. Congrats on son’s acceptance and Good Luck with fin. aid!

I don’t think it will be that long. I bet it’s a lot closer to next weds, the 1st. There are visit days to plan (don’t know when that might be for Amherst) and especially for a kid who needs a solid Financial aid package to attend, you need to know it’s a contender before you go spend even so much as gas money, let alone airfare, to visit.

The good news, as I’ve said elsewhere, you know you will at least get whatever the fafsa is as that’s kind of a minimum when it comes to need (especially since Amherst is one of the few schools that contend to meet need in full). Plus, I think the reputation is pretty good in this regard.

But whatever happens: CONGRATS on the YES!

and oh… I never went the “dear son” route. It’s not that he’s not dear SOME of the time, but especially since applications went in, he wasn’t dear at all. That changed yesterday, thank you God.

supportivemom, you should probably get financial aid information within a week or so. Amherst always sends it separately after admission decision letters. The college does have a financial aid calculator on its website. We found it to be quite accurate.

Modadunn: I’m pretty sure my mom can attest to your comment about children and how “dear” they are during the application time! Haha…it’s not like we mean it. I think the stress just manifests itself into moodiness, worry, anxiousness, you get the idea. Congrats to your son. He should be very proud! And, like you, my mom is also relieved to see the “old me” back seeing how acceptances started flooding the mailbox :)

I believe the acceptance package said you FA would be available online at your MY AMherst page after 4/1.

^Really? Totally did not even notice that. Thanks for the heads up, Jessephen!

My D just got her acceptance!! Congrats everyone and good luck to those still waiting!

Thanks, all, for the answers to my question – we’ll keep an eye out for the financial aid package. And yes, “DS” has had his less-than-dear moments over the past few months, but we can hardly blame him – it’s a stressful time. Now that the acceptances are flooding in, he’s seeing the fruits of his labor, but he also keeps talking about friends who have taken long, wandering, uncommitted trips around the world… I can see that’s a pretty appealing thought, after the railroad train of AP and IB classes, SAT/ACT tests, applications, essays, etc. that he’s been on… I’m sure all the high school seniors are feeling pretty burned out by this time. Hopefully, he (and everyone) can have a relaxing summer, and feel renewed before starting at whatever college he ends up choosing.

And by the way, congrats to everyone here, wherever you end up getting accepted!
