*I've held the same job for 2.5 years now (20 hours a week), and I help support my family in this way; boss loves me and offers to write me a recommendation every time we speak. It would be a fantastic rec too because I am a model employee and am often used to train the newcomers.
*Recommendations should be very good, my GC has known me for about 11 years and my teachers like me rather well...
*I've started my essay about growing up poor and overcoming adversity...don't know if this is a good choice, someone guide me in the right direction

Possible Hooks: First Generation, Trilingual (Ukrainian, Russian, English, and coming very close with German), Poor, born in the Ukraine (citizen of the US), single-parent home, hefty amount of work experience

Thank you!

Number one: How did you get a 6 on the compsci exam? Haha.

And number two: I have no idea, but I'm good at guessing random mumbers like this: I'd say 77.8%. Don't ask me how I got that, answers just kind of come to me. I'm special like that.

Interesting background. Uncommon major - there was only one Astrophysics major in last year's graduating class, and he was even international.

Yeah, that was supposed to be a 5. It was a damn hard exam; if a 6 were possible, I would not have gotten it.

So...the outlook is somewhat favorable?

Take the SAT once more, try to improve to around 700 on each section.

But the language fluencies makes you interesting. Also, Williams is actively pursuing low-income students, or so I've heard, so that would give you a significant advantage.

Yea, I think the random percentage above seems accurate.

Why don't you try the ACT? Different students excel at different tests.

I'm taking the ACT in September. Based solely on practice ACT tests, I'm confident in doing significantly better. I find the questions much more straightforward; hopefully I can pull out a 32.

I think you've probably got a good shot because you're circumstances set you apart, and the chess ranking thing is interesting, as well. but your essay topic might seem slightly cliched, because they will realize that you growed up under-privileged and it makes sense that you had to overcome adversity to excel as you have. If I were you, I'd try to point out something new.
