Just Another "Chances" Question :)

Hey. I've already posted once in the Chances forum, but I'd like to hear from each school thread now. I'm interested in HYP, although I don't know whether I stand much of a chance there...Writing is one of my strong suits, so maybe Chicago will give me a second look.

Sorry for how long this is....please be honest with me. I know it's sort of unusual to be setting sights on Chicago or the Ivies with crappy math skills like mine, but i feel that i may be able to compensate for it. Would I be able to redeem myself math-wise if I studied really hard and did well on the Math IC exam?

Anyways, thanks for your input!

wow, sorry for wasting your time like that Sid_Cheers....laughs. now i've got ants in my pants.

Hey....

See, first of all, remember, that each university means different thngs for diff ppl....if college for you is more of prestige, name, location, proffessor's and so on...

About UChicago...
Remember, its not a numbers school....
I have gone thru ur post in its entirety....your stats are just fine....v good actually...a good fit for UChicago.

I applied to uchicago, and was waitlisted, due to international student financial aid... since i was told the reason for my waitlited and not admitted, i informed the univ. that i do not wish to seek any fin aid. Still wating for the final decision.

UChicago wants ppl who have a strong desire to learn...and more importantly, do so, at Uchicago. Ppl often misconceive that chicago is full of Harvard rejects. That, my friend, is grossly untrue. Admissions look for UChicago mentality. Neway, getting bak to the main subject.

Like i sed, since its not a numbers school, dont wrry too mch abt math grades. U have a flair for writing. Show it in the quirky chicago essays.
I myself have a SAT score of 1460 (780M 680V), wch i got in my very first attempt. UChicago is an intelectually enhancing school.... the 'life of the mind' as they put it. A few tips, since u can always learn form someone else's experience.

Apply early. At least relatively early.
Decide whther UChicago fits ur bill or not....if so, go all out.
Write excellent essays, truly EXCELLENT.
Do me a HUGE Favor.

The writer (his uchicago admission essay), from my very school (New Delhi) is a UChicago graduate, with full tuition scholarship (College honor scholarship, as it is called). You'll get a good idea of UChicago's passion and its students willingness to learn! Their uncommon application is very good. the fact that they do not do different thngs, but things differently, is wat sets them apart....even from HYPS etc etc.

Apply to UChicago.... leave no stone unturned, and you'll be safe!

Quick note: Apply in time, write excellent essays, get good recc's, and show strong enthusiasm.....send in nethng u thnk that'll help..extra writings, pictures..nethng!

Moral of the Story:
Since UChicago is not a numbers school, after you have attained a certain standard in terms of academics and scores....its ur enthusiasm
to learn, entering 'the life of the mind' and "other things" that will get you in.

What ur other thngs are is for u to figure out. And once u have, use 'em well!!

Good Luck and Take care!

i hope the link worked.
its very informative.
jst in case it dint;
http://core-relations.uchicago.edu/VolumeIIpages/mathews.html

And srry fer typos, i dnt review my ealier (and rather long!) post!

thanks a lot for the insight. Yes, i read that essay, pretty clever :) So it seems that Chicago expects of its applicants a quirky and playful intellect... Do you necessarily have to be that creative, or can it be a very serious-minded yet well-executed essay?

hey there...
that was just a sample essay....jst trying to show the 'passion' i was talking abt.... Ofcourse, a serious minded well executed essay (i thot mine was one, actually!!) can be as good...maybe even better....and may even show the same amount of enthusiasm!

Hope that helped
Regards.
