Just came back from visting davis

When I was there last week, I too got lost while trying to exit and leave the Davis campus. I somehow ended up driving through the southwest corner of campus and spotted some cows while passing through the dairy ranch. I'm not sure what the big deal is. I don't mind the cows at all.

is it just me or do davis students take every criticism as a personal attack?

i pointed out the things i liked and didn't like from the visit and some people are seemingly taking offense.

nate cali and cbf88 at least have an open mind on the topic.

and collegemom16, i will not post here anymore since it seems differing opinions are not welcome here. by the way, i'm always nice.

I'm truly sorry. I guess I mistook this for a not so nice or necessary statement The Brian.

"there were cows right across the street of the tercero dorms where i visited one of my friends who goes there.

the smell wasn't so good."

I have seen just as many UCI students get quite upset with any criticism of their campus. No one really likes people to make unnecessary or unkind comments about their school so why do it? My sincere best wishes to you at UCI.

if you look on page 1, i was just clarifying the situation because some people hadn't toured the parts i had.

thanks for the warm wishes. :)

Either way the cows currently located on the far South end of campus (dairy farm) are set to be relocated so no big problem there. Also the Tercero kids say they rarely notice the cows and love their accomodations. Some of the kids really love the cows and enjoy cow watching and occasionally even go cow tipping. UCD has some rather fun tee shirts. ;)

i was very unimpressed with the campus =( maybe i was expecting "too much" it just looks so much nicer in the pictures

I just came back today and I have to say I was pretty impressed. I was expecting a pretty medicore campus with animals running about, but it was actually alot better. The smell was interesting at first, but i mean it only makes it to some places and by the time I left I didn't even notice it.

The dorms were great. UCSC's dorms are wide, Davis's are long so i mean it's all good [although I don't want to do a triple..]

The food was great. my sister who goes to UCSC said her food is pretty bad, but Davis was good. Fresh hamburgers, the little ice cream cups I ate as a kid, good pasta, etc.

Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I'm actually glad I'm going =D hope to see some of you there.

I came back today too, and I loved the campus. It was really wide, and I loved the trees around the campus. The buildings were beautiful too, and the ARC really impressed me. I barely noticed the smell after spending several hours there. The town was really nice too, it really does have that college feel to it.

The only thing I'm worried about is getting lost in the campus (since I have a bad sense of direction), since it's pretty huge. But it is pretty. :)

I'm pretty much set already on Davis. :) Plus, I'll be close to home.

i checked out davis friday and i reallllly liked it. the ARC is awesome esp the free gym! the dorms were nice and most of the buildings were nice as well. i really like how comfortable and relaxed everyone is.

i love the small college town atmosphere. the campus itself is huge but the bus system seems pretty convenient and everyone seems pretty cool about biking.

i know a few people at davis which adds to the comfort and i feel that davis is a great school for me. but i haven't made my decision because i still have to check out ucsd...

I finally understand why everyone has bikes! Haha

I missed the tours, so my family and I got lost for 2 hours, and finally, after making a HUGE circle around the whole campus, we found the cows! Haha- it didn't actually smell too bad. It just kinda smelled when I first got out of the car near Hutchinson. I had to call one of my friends at Davis so I would get home, but otherwise it was all good.

I loved the campus! Everything was lively and clean. I thought the ARC would be bigger, but I still liked it.

I'm between here and Calpoly SLO but Davis is closer to home.

^^ Same here, NorCal, except you actually got into Davis hehehe ;)

My only turn off about Davis is that it's so large. But that comes in handy when it comes to dorms :p

Went to Davis this past saturday...

After really deliberating, i think it's where i want to be for the next four years. People always talked about fit, and i don't think i really understood it until i went to Davis and then the other colleges i also got into. If you keep your mind above petty rankings and lists, and don't worry about "this school being 4 ranks higher" or "this school being ranked lower" i think you'll understand what all the college admissions officers are saying about "fit."

In my opinion:
Overall, the campus is beautiful. I feel it offers anything any student wants in terms of aesthetics. Modern designed buildings, more traditional buildings, big buildings, small buildings. Very verdant, foresty, didn't get too much of a farm feel til i left the city southbound and went for a good 10-15 minutes down the highway. I more got the sense of a small, intellectual town (artsy, coffee shops, bakeries etc.)

In terms of the cows...
I couldn't see any issue...i think there are honestly 100 animals (of any kind) total on the campus (5 of which are anywhere near the dorms or campus that normal students would ever come across). Smell hits you for about 3 seconds then goes away, it's not too strong and it certainly isn't pervasive like some will make you think.

Student body:
EXTREMELY nice. Even the ones that weren't actually part of explore UC Davis. I went to a restaurant in town, and had a 15 minute conversation with both my waitress and the hostess. Then at my hotel (not embellishing) talked for about 45 minutes with the clerk behind the counter. Very laid back, very smart, very friendly. And when they say college town...they mean it. There wasn't one establishment that didn't seem to have some sort of connection with the college. School spirit was also not lacking at all, they're very proud of who they are and where they're from.

Outside of school:
There seemed to be parties in the surrounding houses from what the students i talked to said. Many go to Sacramento for shopping and quick getaways (15 min from campus by car or train[$8-$9 ticket]) or to San Fran for weekend trips (45 min-1 hour drive [dunno about train, but know it's available]). Davis itself had great food, small art galleries, and a supportive town, not to mention a lot of bikes.

Overall the school seemed very liberal, very experimental, and very open. They have communal housing projects that are student run that seemed very interesting. It's a very "Bohemian" kind of school, if you know what i mean. Definately not for everyone. A typical stuck up prep school type probably won't fit in (that's not a knock at anyone, merely my feeling). But an open-minded, fairly moderate to liberal, ambitious, and smart student will fit right in.

Environment and atmosphere is very important to me. I love the whole Davis small college town feel. It's that kind of environment that I want to be in during my college years.

However, the small town is the last place I would want to be AFTER I finish school. I'm a big city person, but for college I want to escape to a small college town and enjoy that unique environment.

Berkeley is actually much closer to me than Davis, but after visiting the general area where the campus is situated, I would never go there despite its outstanding national reputation. I was driving through University Ave. in Berkeley, and to me it looks like a ghetto. The area looks really poor and dangerous. There were lots of homeless and shady looking people walking the streets. When I apply for grad school in a year, I would choose both UCLA and UCSD over UCB.

I thought the tour was disappointing because they didn't let us see inside the buildings and was a little short. All we got to do was walk around campus and look from the outside. It appeared to be very calm and relaxing and some parts of the school are very old.

I'm going on the Welcome Day on the 27th. It better not rain that day. That would suck ass.
