I already have my opinions on the two pretty much set, so say whatever you want. I'm just curious as to how many people say they'd rather go to each one for a liberal arts major. And yes, I know "the two are very different." We won't get into why I chose these two. Just pick one that you like.

Cornell (ten characters)

we should keep counts. so

Cornell 1
Rice 0

You can say why, too. I just want to be clear that my opinions are set so don't worry about it too much.

Personally, Cornell. For one, it's not Texas. And I like the diversity and academic versatility that comes from a larger college. I also enjoy small-mid size towns near the wilderness.

I find this choice impossible to make! Which did you choose and why?

(Whenever you want to tell us, that is.. ;) )

To be honest, I was drawn to these schools in different ways for different reasons, and I don't feel like stating anything else because a.) i don't want to influence this beautiful debate, and b.) i'm always nervous that there is an adcom reading my posts, especially since my sn reveals my last name.

Edit: By the way, i am a senior and not accepted to either yet, so...it's hypothetical.

cornell east coast =D...huge difference

Fair enough. It is a wonderful debate, right up there with Lincoln-Douglas. IIRC, in fact, I think they couldn't decide Rice v. Cornell either. In fact, I don't think either had been founded yet ;)

This is the first time I've been stymied. I know Cornell better, but am inclined to choose Rice, except that I'm slightly afraid of Texas :(

Cornell (10 characters)

Rice, no question.

well i hate houston's humid weather. i rather freeze my ass off

Rice, no doubt.

Rice seems to be plagued by superficial misconceptions.

Rice for sure.

Seems even in this thread it's belittled by Texas stereotypes (except Houston is pretty hot)

Rice- no question. Smaller, but still large enough. Great access to performing arts and other cultural offerings of Houston. Better weather- you aren't there in the summer, which is when it is really bad. Winters are great at Rice (except for right now when they just had ice).
I love Cornell, too, but Rice wins out in my opinion.

Rice--great weather, friendlier, more relaxed atmosphere, their football team went to a bowl game this year, and the residential college system is cool.

Then again, their coach just bolted for Tulsa.

My vote goes to Rice:
-Houston is a mucher bigger, and (IMO) better city than Ithaca. (Houston has the largest medical center in the country; tons of restuarants; shopping; theatre/arts/symphony; museums; internship/work opportunities, etc.)

-The weather is random. But other than during the summer, it's really not that bad.

-Rice's baseball team is awesome; and their football team was fairly good this year. Houston has the Astros, who went to the World Series two years ago; the Rockets, who have Yao and T-Mac; the Dynamo, who won the MLS Championship last season; and the Texans, who... well, nevermind.

-The residential college system is really awesome.

-Rice has great academic programs. The Rice/Baylor is probably the best in the country. Great in engineering and the sciences. Great in architecture. Rice even has a great school of music.

-FWIW, Rice is ranked #1 in "Best Quality of Life", #1 in "Lots of Race/Class Interaction", and #3 "Best Overall Academic Experience for Undergraduates" by the Princeton Review.

Cornell

I'm very picky about college campuses, and Cornell's is beautiful. Cornell also has great food. :D

CORNELL - by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is more prestigious, a better campus..... Rice is overrated.

"Rice is overrated"

You've got to be kidding me...Rice is one of the most underrated universities in the US. If Rice was located in the Northeast, it would, without doubt, perform on par with the ivies -- it would be a great mix of engineering, sciences, music, architecture, etc.

Also, have you ever even been to Rice to check out the campus?
