Just curious-if you have the money to pay

If you have enough money and can pay the full tuition -do they give you less merit aid??

They (the colleges) would not know your income. If you don’t apply for need-based financial aid - colleges would have no idea as to your annual income or your assets. So, merit aid is not connected to your finances. It is just based on the student’s stats - GPA, test scores, etc.

Ok thanks- just starting to look at all of this-I have a junior- so no need to fill out FAFSA if you do not need financial aid

Some colleges and universities will require FAFSA and/or CSS Profile for candidates for merit aid. You need to check out the policies of each institution. Also, some will not award financial aid in future years if you haven’t applied for the first year. Seems strange, I know, but if there is a possibility that your financial situation could change enough so that your child could need aid in the future (even though you absolutely don’t need it now), you should go ahead and do the paperwork for the first year.

I’m sure happymom is correct about some schools - but I know I have looked at the websites for many that award merit aid based simply on GPA/test scores. They generally state that no additional aplication is required and that all applicants are automatically considered. These are the types of schools that I am referring to, where they don’t need income doc. to award merit aid.

Some schools have need-aware merit aid. That is, the best of the poorest get the most. Take Boston University for example (and George Washington).

hlsess…

We have never filled out a FAFSA, and both of my kids have generous merit scholarships. However, there are some schools that require a FAFSA submittal. I don’t know if that’s to prevent them from giving Bill Gates’ kids scholarships or what.

You may want to consider some schools that give assured scholarships for stats…

If money could get Bill Gates’s kid to come to your university, you’d be smart to pay it! Every 5 years for alumni reunions, you can probably count on a $1 million donation.
