I'm curious why approx 94% (15k/16k) of NMSF become NMF and the other 6% don't. What is it about the 1,000 or so students that keeps them from being finalist? Does it have to do with not completing all of the other requirements for becoming a NMF or is there a further process of weeding out the NMSF based on PSAT scoring? S1 has a 210 on the PSAT which should make the cut-off for NMSF in South Dakota (last 7 years cut-offs have been between 202-206). What would keep him from being part of the 94% that do become Finalists?

It seems that the only thing that prevents people from becoming Finalists are 1) an exceptionally poor application (terrible GPA, for example), but most likely 2) they just didn't complete the application.

I've applied to be a NMF for the class of 09, and that's what was told to me when I got the application in September.

could also because of disciplinary problems at school.

So basically if he fulfills all of the requirements on the application, maintains his GPA (which is 4.0 UW and 4.28 weighted with several APs), and stays out of trouble (which shouldn't be a problem) he will become a NMF? Thanks for the information - I was having a hard time determining why they would cut only 5-6% from the group.

Also get a SAT score that is higher than 2000.
