what are some of the social opportunities at WP? what are the nearby colleges, etc. for dating? how excatly do weekend passes work?

Well there are the other plebes and the ikettes.;-)

I thought plebes were off-limits. I think it was in Absolutely American that I read about some rumor that local girls get community service hours to go to the balls. If that's true, that's freaking hilarious. If it's not true, it's still an awesome rumor.

^^^ That's awesome, I've never heard that before.

New York City is about an hour away from West Point and there's plenty to do there, plus the Adirondacks are great if you're an outdoorsman. The Jersey Shore is only about 4.5-5 hours away, too.

futurewarrior is right, plebes are generally not allowed to leave campus unless they're on a sports team or going to the Army-Navy game.

I don't know the specifics but I have a friend who's a plebe right now, and he even got to go to the Texas A&M game. Don't keep your fingers crossed, however. Plan on spending most weekends on post, especially during CBT.

I think I left 4 weekends last semester including thanksgiving and army-navy. Plebes are allowed to date other plebes. Local girls are brought in for events at the plebe club (which is not very popular), but they get community service for it, so you can imagine what sort of fine people actually come.

So that rumor IS true!!! That's awesome. I can't wait to tell the guys in my class and see their reaction.

It's not as bad as you're all making it sound. My son is a yearling now but he got out a lot during his plebe year. If you get good grades you'll get virtually all of the passes you'd want. I was at WP this past weekend to watch my son play lacrosse - it was yearling weekend - big dinner and dance. Tons of young ladies all over the post.

Lol - my son (a plebe) also thought it was hilarious that girls got community service hours for attending a "hop".
Officially, I believe that plebes get one pass per semester in addition to sanctioned leave like Thanksgiving break, Christmas break etc. Additional passes can be earned and spirit passes can be given to attend off post sporting events. Girlfriends can come up to WP for sporting events such as football games. Depending on company policy they may even be allowed to join the plebe for pregame company BBQs etc. Pass priviledges can be revoked for academic or discipline issues, not passing the APFT etc.
Not your usual freshman social scene, but WP is not your usual college....Unless you are on a sports team, I would expect to spend most weekends as a plebe at WP.

There's a spirit pass almost every weekend, but you normally have to provide your own transportation, attend the game in uniform, and have formation before and after the game in uniform. Those are a lot of fun! Army/Navy on a smaller scale...
