just curious..

What is the biggest earthquakes ever occurred in berkeley?

Thanks.

the two major destructive bay area tremblors, Loma Prieta and San Fran of 1906, were on the San Andreas fault (along south bay and peninsula). as for the hayward fault (which berkeley sits on), there haven’t been any super destructive quakes…although seismologists say that the hayward fault is capable of a big one. most of the recorded biggies haven’t actually occurred in berkeley, but obviously affected the area b/c of the close proximity in the bay area.

[Hayward Fault Zone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Hayward Fault Zone - Wikipedia)

the bigger boy to worry about is the san andreas, although that’s not to say that hayward doesn’t have potential.

there’s about a 60% chance of a major earthquake in the bay area within the next 20-30 years. About 30% that it will be on the hayward, and 20% on san andreas.

i wouldn’t worry too much about major earthquakes - in general they don’t happen that often throughout history anyway. i’ve experienced 2 earthquakes at berkeley - one was in the units on the top floor and our lamps fell off the table and broke…that’s about it. if you are from CA you are probably used to the occasional shake.
