Just decided I cared

What if I'm in the middle of my second marking period of junior year and JUST decided I care enough to try to get good grades and get into a good, non-community college? My grades have been C's with some A's, B's, and D's but now I really need to bring my GPA up as much as humanly possible. Advice? Success stories? Or is it too late?

well, congratulations on taking the first step towards a brighter future :)

you probably won’t be able to get into harvard, but on the plus side colleges do look favorably at upward trends, so it can’t hurt to try! you might also consider going to a community college and then later transferring to a four-year school

D’s are quite the blemish on any report; it will definitely hurt your chances to any “good non-community college”. The fact that you JUST decided to care now is amusing; I know people who have been caring since freshman year. Now, who is most likely to get in?

Go figure.

Well you’ve realized, so that’s a start. At least you didn’t wait until after you graduated to wake up :P

Unfortunately, D’s do look quite bad. But you also have A’s and B’s, so that’s good. The important thing is just to work hard on everything, and your grades should start to turn upwards.

You can’t change the past…but you can impact your future. It’s never too late. Advice I received long ago and still use today…

It’s NOT too late! You still have hope. =]

I guess I was sort of the same way, but I didn’t decide that I cared until the beginning of sophomore year. (I’m a junior now, woot) Then, I bombed first trimester of junior year.

Obviously, something inspired you to start caring. Most people don’t just “start caring” for no reason.
You’ve got to dig deep and figure out what that is, and make sure that it’s obtainable, and keep it in the back of your head at all times. (yay, more weights on your shoulders =/ )

Try to get all A’s for the rest of your junior year. It may seem hard, but It’s possible. Buckle down.

Until then, here’s a super fun, highly rated, non- community college that I’m sure you’d be able to get into: [Minnesota State University, Mankato](http://www.mnsu.edu/)

It’s my backup (I’ve gotten a fair share of D’s, too), and I’d still be perfectly happy going there, as long as it wasn’t for more than 2 years.

Good luck my friend.

It’s not too late. The ACT’s are everything, you know…

“The ACT’s are everything, you know…”

Acceptance is based on a holistic approach…

Not everywhere. But at most places that people on these forums are considering.

For Cakeohcake, though, it kind of seems like the ACT’s are gonna make it or break it.
As well as the second half of 11th grade.

atleast u realized u wanna go to a good school… ummm u might want to take honors and study really hard for the SAT and ACT

i gotz natural talent

WishWash

I was at Mankato once, and all I can remember is that they have weird ceilings. Like in one of the dining areas it looked like someone had painted it with a fire extinguisher and in another room it had speakers in the ceiling and it looked like the speakers were inside creaters/ like the moon’s surface.

“atleast”

■■■■■■■■11 fancies irony.

Hmm. I have been in a lot of honors and AP classes, it’s just I never really bothered to do well. Looking at just my final year averages, I’ve “only” (haha) had one D and one withdrew failing class. Most of my good grades are in French and music though so that kind of sucks.

I think where I’m from I’m supposed to take SAT’s, not ACT’s. I did decently well on the PSAT’s (207- CR 72, M 64, WR 73, without preparing) but I feel like good SAT scores will just make admissions people look down on me even more for not applying myself… and Minnesota is too far haha.

Eh. Junior year is pretty late, just saying, especially since junior year is the most important. Just work to make your final grades golden.

Your stats really aren’t that bad. I don’t think colleges will look down on you for your PSAT score, in fact I think it will benefit you. It’s a really great score (your score’s higher than mine). Also the fact that you’re taking AP/H classes is good. Just work really hard this year and you won’t be as bad off as you think.
