Just did Catapult

Nic's summary is pretty much dead on...

In the morning right after breakfast you go to announcements where they tell you what you will be doing that day; whether or not your group is going on a fieldtrip to a plant/factory and what lectures your group is going to that day (if no field trip). It was great becasue you had a lecture everyday (but sundays) from different teachers / different departments. Like there was the hotdog cooker by the EE, the ME talked about Civil Engineering since there wasn't anyone else to do it, there were Biomedical Engineers talking about their line or work, the Chem Engineer talked about distilation, the Software programmer talked about algorithems, i can't remember any more off the top of my head...

The group you're in you choose. The people and the subject. In the middle you have to do a power point presentaion on your progress. At the end it's like an open house science fair and there has to be at least 1 group member from each group with their poster ready to give a summary of what their / your project was...and be prepared for questions. I was really nervous about it at first, but it wasn't so bad.

You get 3 meals a day, if you go to them. There were severla mornings that i slept in and missed breakfast becuase you had to be at morning meeting on time or you were "punished" the next day (wacky punishments like not being able to touch a door knob all day). You get free time at night, and the counselors have a different trip almost every night...hmm

But it was great becasue i got to hang out with some of who are now my best friends...but they live all the way across the country from me now :-/

But as i was reading Nic's...it was like a flashback :p
It was so great. If you think you are into engineering and the sciences, totaly go to Catapult.

What grade are you supposed to be in to attend catapult?

OOPS - Sorry. I see the web site says you have to complete your junior year.

Thanks, kidrufus, for a nice addition to nic's remarks! Like him, it sounds like you're ready to enroll right now. I think the comments of RH faculty who worked with you over the summer will carry alot of weight with the adcom. Totally guessing on that one but it would seem logical wouldn't it? Wanted to ask: can students pick the projects that want to work on or are they "assigned" to a group? Is it possible to change projects half way through (or to sample) more than one project?

Yes, you get to pick your projects. The faculty give you a broad range of projects (what's on the website, plus some of what they think would be a fun to do as projects) and you and your group get to pick. You do get to choose who's in your group and if you fly in (a day early) you get 3 or 4 days before you have to pick your group. Also you have like 3 or 4 days, after you pick your project, of research and planning (which you will need) before you can't change projects. It's pretty cool. Out of 39 groups only 1 group disbanded and 1 group just changed projects.

Probably missed this info on the RHIT site but can you give me a rough idea of how many students there were? (You mentioned 39 groups; assuming 5 per group, it comes out close to 200. Is this about right?) Also, was there a rough 50/50 split between M/F? (Not to be intended the wrong way; just wanted an idea of what it was like).

Thanks.

No, max group size was 4, most had 3 or 4. And that's the perfect group size for our projects. I was never overwhelmed or bored to the point of falling asleep. Our session had 120, session 1 had 90.

As to your second question, not even close. I believe it was approximately 100-20 M-F. But with beautiful girls like kidrufus we really didn't need that many. Besides, you're there to study, gosh darn it! And PDA's are strictly prohibited. They play PDA Dodgeball, I'll leave it to your imagination to embellish.

Hey nic, thx for the numbers and as for the second part of my question, I hadn't intended anything beyond a simple breakdown of M/F. Some summer programs are intended as single gender only; others are coed. I was just trying to get some idea of the mix at RH. Wouldn't change my decision (assuming I'm accepted next March(!) for the 2006 program. At least you and kidrufus only have to wait until October or so; I can't even begin submitting info for another 8 months! The program sounds interesting though. Good luck and thanks for posting

Lol. yeah there was almost a 5:1 ratio guys to girls.

heheh. PDA dodgeball. do you even realize how worked out the counselors had the game? I was talking ot one of the guy counselors and he was describing the point system and some of the rules...

Oh yeah. And they had standings, you know, which counselot hit up the most couples.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
who won? i so wanna know. and i want to know who got caught the most. that would be great. I know they got me once, but that was cuz nat had his arm up on the back of the couch :p. I also know someone got pegged in the face youch.

In the face? That's gotta be bonus points....

nope, only if it ricochets... i know that's kinda spelled wrong.

haha, we had the whole PDA dodgeball thing too last year.. as well as people armed with waterguns and water bottles to shoot at those PDA'ing.. however, it all culminated in the end at the banquet where those who were caught the most were, ahem, acknowledged by the counselors with special awards.. oh good times. :)

I'm so glad everyone had such an amazing experience. As an incoming freshman (I'm leaving in less than a week!!), I'm way too excited to see who ends up going to Rose as a result of their Catapult experience. I already know of about 15 from my session (second one of 2004) that are going. It's so nice to know people already once you get to school.. as well as a few profs that you already have a great relationship that you know you can talk to if you need anything.

edit: Just to comment on the whole PDA thing.. I felt that it got a little out of hand, when you were just sitting next to a guy and they felt that you were getting too close.. fell victim to that a couple of times myself. ;) It was all in good fun though.

edit 2: anyone who went to Catapult this year.. what profs were there? I knew which counselors participated (I looked on the website, haha) but I'm really interested to know who came back the next year.

I guess different prof's do different sessions, but ours were Brackin, Stamper, Burchett(ME), Herniter, Song(EE), Rogee(Biomed), Miller(ChemE), and Padgett, Chinangananin(That's a butchered spelling, but you get the idea, and those two were Software Engineers)

Oh wow, so only 3 from last year's session came.. we had Song, Miller and Brackin was the head (I loved her and can't wait to see her again!!! :) ). Good stuff.

wow, pda dodgeball

ultimate nerdiness
lol

I will take that as a comliment, thank you!

hmm no one's posted here in a while... is this program a first-come, first-serve thing? because that's what the website said and i was confused because i thought you had to like apply and get accepted

You do, so I think it is just first-come first-serve for those accepted.

ohh gotcha, thanks
