Just discovered this college as a good match for D

My daughter is a high school junior and we have been researching colleges (East Coast). She is interested in Communications as a major and Vocal Performance as a minor/or BA. We haven't visited this school yet but, it seems to be a good match for her.

D loves warmer weather, seems to have GPA, SAT's, EC, matching this school.

My questions are: What is the caliber of the Music Department, specifically VP? Is there a jewish population and /or organization? Are the instructors available to students? Do they give financial aid (other then student loans) to out of state applicants?

Hi Artspeak,
For a Department of Music (as opposed to a School of Music), UNC has a very strong performance program. VP is especially good - majors regularly win top spots at NATS and in recent years have gone on to grad school at Eastman, NEC, BOCO among others. It’s a very nurturing, supportive department with incredibly friendly students and nice, accessible faculty. Lots of students double major.

The University does pretty well for need-based financial aid and the Music Department gives some merit aid awards to majors.

The Jewish population is small but active. There’s a beautiful new Hillel building with lots of activities and some students started a Jewish a cappella group a few years ago that’s really taken off. Of course if you’re from New York, it won’t seem like much…

I’m going to send you a PM.
