<p>My understanding is that custody really makes no difference when it comes to filling out FAFSA. If the child resides more that half the time with the non-custodial parent then the non-custodial parent fills out the FAFSA based on his or her information. If the non custodial parent is remarried then the FAFSA will also include the step-parent info.</p>
<p>That’s true, custody for FAFSA is determined by actual physical custody. From the FAFSA instructions:</p>
<p>If your parents have divorced or separated, answer only the questions about the parent that you lived with most during the last 12 months. If you did not live with one parent more than the other, answer only the questions about the parent who provided most of your financial support during the last 12 months.</p>
