I know this is a FAQ but my search skills are failing me, so....

I've just e-filed and my return has been "accepted" by the IRS. At what point will I be able to use the IRS retrieval tool in my son's FAFSA? I am expecting a refund, and IIRC there's a way to tell by using the "where's my refund" IRS tool. Right now it shows "Return Received". Am I waiting for it to say "Refund Approved"? Thanks in advance!

mathmom - did your child also need to file? First year? I don’t know if things are moving more efficiently this year, but last year the data retrieval was a PITA, especially for first time filers… seemed to delay the data retrieval process.

^There were delays last year on the IRS processing side, and perhaps DRT as well. From the stickied thread, this year looks pretty good if there is not tax due.

Neither of my kids is a first-time filer this year. My older will be filing for the 2nd or 3rd time, and my younger doesn’t need to file. Working on younger’s submissions first because he is a HS senior this year. Deadlines for the college junior are substantially later ;-)

Be aware that if you have to pay, the DRT won’t be available until after you pay, even if you have filed earlier. Just found out about that wrinkle!
