Just for fun...,overheard on a college tour

Ours learned the week prior to starting college

Ours will learn the week prior to starting college!

On a related note, both times we’ve visited Trinity University, our tour guides made a big deal out of the fact that dorm rooms and bathrooms are cleaned once every two weeks. Although I think that’s a pretty unusual service, I didn’t give it much thought at the time, but now that I’ve started reading the “how to get your kid ready for college” threads . . . . .

DD did her own laundry through most of HS but I still got a call when she got to college because the machines were so different than what we had at home. ; )

My DD started doing her laundry and folded her clothes when she was 6 years old. She also did get mattress pad and sheets. When she 8 years old, she put the sheets on her bed after washing them. When she was 9, she started vacuuming her room and started making breakfast. I taught her how to make pancakes, scrambled and fried eggs, bacon and sausages.

So did you hear anything on a college tour?

In a dorm tour: Living groups are quite small - there are about 6 students per restroom stall unevenly split between 2 floors. One mom was very concerned that her kid might have to go upstairs in their pajamas to shower. I hope she didn’t tour the dorm on campus that is known for clothing-optional practices.

On multiple tours at various schools some parents seemed scandalized that there were co-ed dorms.

This one is kind of minor but at NYU two different people (admissions guy in info session and then tour guide) both mentioned that Lady Gaga had only come in second place when she had competed in their yearly student talent show. Neither knew who had come in first. So of course we googled that later
to find out that actually, she had come in THIRD! LOL.

So who DID come in first?

My S started doing his laundry at age 3
kidding! He will learn before going - is it really so hard?
Best thing we heard on a recent tour was walking by the frat houses the guide was talking about how they do so much service. Like on weekends they charge $3 at the door to get into a “get together” and some of the proceeds go to charity. Every weekend!
So
a frat party.

@Leigh22: From my experience in my days as a prep school dorm parent, I can assure you that there are an infinite number of ways that teenage boys can misuse laundry machines. So, the answer to your question is “Maybe, yes
”

Perhaps JHU was too expensive for that student?

Wouldn’t be surprised if that were the main, or at least a major, factor in most college students’ decisions.

With or without coed bathrooms?

My kid learned how to do laundry at geek camp, which was at a university. However, we have not yet managed to get her to wash clothes at home

Re: the co-ed bathroom/dorm comment:

It is weird how different people’s experiences can be. My spouse and I each had co-ed dorms and bathrooms at our respective colleges back in the 1980’s! It is not a new concept.

Can we start a second thread on laundry, etc? I want to hear tour stories.

Some dad started yelling, Bailey get back here right now. Another dad deadpans that he hopes Bailey is a dog. Then, yet another dad notes that Bailey is very ready to go to college. My son cracked a smile.

I actually have no idea if Bailey was a dog or a younger child on campus with an older sibling.

To continue the laundry theme, one of schools we toured had a guide that said “the laundry is free” to which I jokingly replied, “actually it costs 70k per yr”.

Keeping with the laundry theme; I lived in a fraternity where the fraternity colors were bright red and white. Each year the freshmen bought fraternity emblemed clothing. Most freshmen just threw everything into the washer at once. You could always tell the freshmen after that because everything that was supposed to be white was now pink!!!
