Hello, I want to know my chances of becoming a Questbridge finalist for their college match scholarship.
My GPA is 3.88 (unweighted) and a 4.05 weighted
Not sure about my rank but it is definitely top 10%
SAT: 1690 (1st time), 1980 (second try)
AP courses taken: AP Computer Science A, AP Environmental science, AP Calc AB
Courses going to take senior year: Calc 2-3 and Physics 1-3 at a community college (my high school doesn’t offer many AP classes and most aren’t taught well.)
My extracurricular include Varsity Tennis and Golf (Junior and Senior Yr), Key club, Computer science club, NHS, Compost club and Mock Trial.
Circumstances: My father was diagnosed with stage 2 cancer at the beginning of my transition into high school(which explains for why I had a 3.6 freshmen year and then jumped to a 4.0 sophomore/junior year). My mom had to support the family with a sub < 30k income. 1st gen college student(neither of my parents finished middle school), from China, I started working part time since the moment I turned 16 and continued to do well in school.
Income: A bit less than 30k.
Thank you.
No one can really tell you chances, but you are certainly eligible in every way.
Well let me give you an idea. I am a college prep scholar, which means that I have a high chance of being selected as a match participant, and from what I can tell the hardest thing to get past is income. If you make 50k plus your not likely to get in.
What are your families assets? I know of people who did not get in, in all likelihood due to their 350k home. Your fathers medical expenses will definitely be taken into consideration as will your work history, Questbridge will ask where your earnings went, so be prepared with a lovely and creative response for that.
Nail those essays and you should be fine, however, do remember that getting into the match is nowhere near as selective as actually matching. Less than 2% I think actually get the full match, however you do get free apps for RD to all of the schools on their partner list and you get to distinguish yourself as a questbridge applicant which is worth quite a bit, Yale admitted 80 this past year !!!
@brown1311917 Darn, my parents were hardworking individuals and they managed to pay off a 600k house 5 years ago. However our income right now is below 30k, and my income from my part time job contributes fully to our living expenses.
@Cheesusrice Don’t let that stop you from applying.Especially that your work goes straight to living expenses, I would say that’s actually a good thing. They want to know if you got a job because your family needed it or if you got a job to get the new xBox. You can explain in the extra comments area about how your 600k home was purchased before your Dad got sick, or before some financial problems and they will be more lenient. Explain everything in those side comment areas, that is what makes a Questbridge application different. It allows you to explain why even though you have a 600k home, you cannot afford 350k in tuition!
Great news everybody, I am a QuestBridge finalist! I am glad I believed in myself and actually finished the app.
Good for you, Cheesusrice. Good luck to you.
