Just Found Out

I just found out that a friend of mine from a couple years back got into Yale SCEA. Yale is my #1 school, with no others coming anywhere near it. It is my dream school (yes I know it's bad to have your heart set on one school; oh well).

I'm really, really jealous right now because I know she'll be there next year and I know I won't because the admissions process is such a crapshoot that my chances are practically non-existent. I am happy for her, but I'm really jealous too. lol Grrrr.

Sorry, something I just had to get off my chest.

Haha I actually have an old friend I no longer talk to (but was really good friends with her in middle school) who got in (found out on fb). I got deferred SCEA. I’m really jealous even though I know I shouldn’t be… eh… But yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from.

Yeah I know! I know I shouldn’t be jealous and should be happy for her (and I am) but I just can’t help shake the feeling that she’ll be there enjoying Yale next year while I’m stuck at one of my lower choices, wishing I could be in New Haven too.

Look at the bright side, at least you got deferred! That means they at least have interest in you, or else they would have rejected you haha. I don’t know if they even know I exist right now.

It’s not bad to have a dream school, it’s bad to be unrealistic about a dream school. Now, I’m not saying that Yale is unrealistic for you (idk anything about you xD), so just work reallly reallly hard and hope for the best, I guess.

Also, being “stuck” at one of your “lower” choices might not be the worst thing in the world. There are almost 4,000 colleges/universities in the country, you’ll find another that’ll make you happy :)

Oh I know, but I can almost guarantee that my lower choice won’t be as good as Yale, so I’ll always have that inkling feeling that I’m missing out… XD

Yale is unrealistic for anyone, though. lol

If you are curious, I got a 34 ACT, 4.0 UW/4.3 W GPA, okay ECs, low income (I’m a QB finalist), great teacher recs and hopefully pretty great essays. Although the entire class just bombed an AP Physics C test (like, everyone will get Fs), so that 4.0 UW GPA will go down after this semester is over unfortunately.

EDIT: What’s worse is every one of my friends at my school thinks that I’m guaranteed a spot at Yale, almost like it’s a state school. Just puts more pressure. haha

I wish I was my friend right now.

^I know what you mean, but it’ll take patience so you can look back with hindsight and say “These were still the best four years of my life.” Even though Yale is obvs great with FA, maybe you could find somewhere cheaper but similarly prestigious academically? Some place with more concrete admissions?

Your stats are, of course, great. Unfortunately, the fact that your friend has already gotten in slightly hurts YOUR chances, since colleges don’t wanna take too many kids from the same school. That’s in part why my school went 0/10 with Yale this year; we sent 6 kids last year (one of them even had legacy). A low dip in your GPA won’t kill your chances, by the way.

-Pats- I know. Gotta take a dose of reality though and prepare for the worst, even if it might not come.

My friend actually goes to a different school; I met her at a summer program. haha Yeah it’ll be hard but I think I’ll be able to move on.

Yep I’ve already prepared for rejection but I know it’s still going to suck when I get it haha What can you do I guess.

I know a kid with pretty lame grades who recently got into Stanford. …The catch? His dad just became an elected congressman. facepalm

I also know a kid who was offered a place at Harvard, because he was a football player. They only were going to require him to have a 3.5 GPA and an 1150 SAT score. He chose a different school, though.

Someone that I met at a summer math/science program just got into Yale. I found out through FB. Doubt he even remembers me.

Me… I was just elated to get into my state school. haha

Hey… you miss 100% of the shot you don’t take. Who knows… you might get into Yale.

Oh yeah, I am applying, but I’m already prepared to see the rejection letter come April. lol

^I feel like that’s the best way to be.

A. If you get the rejection letter, you’re somewhat at peace with it.
B. If you get in, then you’re absolutely elated.

I think the worst outcome is waitlisted.

Am I really the only one on here who’s honestly never been attracted to Ivies?
FallenAngel, you can get into plenty of other equally great, “prestigious” colleges which will also give you a massive amount of aid. Don’t worry~

That seems normal.

@wanton I’m not. I only applied to my state college and I’m not sending in any more since I got in.

@wanton - I only have two Ivies in my top schools; the fact that Yale is an Ivy isn’t why I want to go there, it just happens to be one of Yale’s characteristics.

I found out that an old friend is currently studying chemical engineering at Cornell from my mom, who ran into my friend’s mom at the mall. She sent me a text message about it complete with a frowny face, and when she came home, she was all like “why aren’t you smart like her?” Um, thanks, mom, for ignoring my 5.6 GPA and complete disinterest in engineering. Now I’m feeling unnecessary pressure to ‘beat’ my old friend … and really, the only way for me to do that is to get into Wharton. D: Hope you get into Yale, though! :)
