Just found out

I applied as a transfer student for next semester and I just found today that I got in. I’m so excited… it was my top choice and I really can’t wait to start. Anyway, here are my stats, hopefully they’ll be able to help someone out.

HS GPA: 3.6ish UW, 3.9 weighted, full IB program
College GPA: 3.87 after 32 credits (2 semesters)… Barnard also saw mid-semester reports which brought my predicted GPA to 3.91 or so. I’m also in my school’s Honors Program.
SATs (old): 1420… 730 v, 690 m

ECs:
-Lots of theatre (acting, backstage work, stage management, tech work, costume/makeup design, directing) 9,10, 11, 12 and currently
-Varsity Volleyball 10, 11, 12… was captain, won a few tournament team awards, Coaches Award and MVP
-Varsity Soccer 9, 10, 11, 12 and in college
-MUN 10, 11, 12… was Deputy Ambassador for one delegation and was admitted to the Conference newspaper staff at The Hague
-was on the SGA in HS and the Community Service Council in HS
-various community service activities throughout HS and currently a member of Campus Lions Club
-an editor of HS newspaper, and maybe a couple other things I’m not remembering right now.

Academic: National Merit “commended” student, Honors Program here, Dean’s list one semester, Presidential Scholars list another semester.

Work: Teacher at a Language Immersion camp over the summer (I received a bilingual certificate from IB in French); intern in GaTech’s Microsystems Packaging program; some various work as a camp counselor.

Recs:

 • one extremely imperson Dean/Advisor rec… like not one person I had ever met contributed to it and it had to go through several departments because that’s how my current school is set up.
 • one really great rec from an English teacher… I don’t think she was a prof or anything, she just knew me better than my other profs (due to most classes being 300ish students) and had a good understanding of my capabilities as a student.

Essays:
From all outside accounts, very strong. Must have re-written each about fifty times. My main “why I want to transfer” essay focused on things I missed from my HS (academic challenge, diversity, urban environment, etc) rather than critiquing my current institution too much. For both school’s supplements I had an answer or two that was rather dry, but then at least two really strong answers that showed off my personality pretty well.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank everyone here for all their help throughout the process. It was really great to hear perspectives from current students, as well as from applicants. Good luck to everyone applying! :)

congrats! just wondering [haha], how did you receive your notification? i'm not sure if it makes a difference, but i'm a high school student applying early decision. is it different for transfer students? also, do you live in/near nyc, because supposedly they get their decisions earlier too. thanks, and congrats again!

Awesome, congratulations!!!

Thanks to both of you :)

I think transfer students probably find out a bit before ED applicants just because we start next semester (exactly a month from today, actually, with orientation), so we have very little time to get everything in order. I received my notification in the mail... or my parents did anyway, since I had it mailed to my house. Apparently it was the stereotypical large envelope. Their house is in Atlanta, so it normally takes about 3-5 days for things to arrive from NY (although the acceptance letter I received today was sent from NYU Dec. 2nd, and I have no idea when Barnard's was mailed, so I don't know how reliable that estimate is). Good luck!!!

Hey justwondering, my d attends barnard and is from the atlanta area as well...congrats and I hope you love it there as much as she does!!!

Thanks so much! I'm really looking forward to it, and I'm glad to hear she's so happy there.

are u going to be a freshman (c/o 09) for the spring 06 semester?
where were u before?

No, I'll be a second semester sophomore or junior, depending on how much credit they award my IB courses. I'm currently at the University of Georgia... well for two more days anyway :)

Hey, my ex-boyfriend transferred from Columbia to UGA!

Funny. :)

You have GOT to be kidding me!!!! I hope he really likes football....

Haha, small world. Was he from GA, because if so the HOPE Scholarship is a pretty convincing reason to go to school at UGA (in fact, that was pretty much the only reason I ended up coming here as a freshman). But yeah, I agree with churchmusicmom, football is something that's taken pretty seriously here... wow that was an understatement. I'm personally looking forward to leaving like I can't even explain, but I hope he really enjoys it here and gets a great experience out of it :)

yeah, justwondering, my two sons have/are attending UGA. One graduated last year (transferred back from out of state...yep, the HOPE was a good incentive!) and one graduates this year. It just did NOT offer what my D needed or wanted, though she LOVES the football part of it. Columbia/Barnard for sure does NOT offer THAT!!!! She has not suffered, however! Best to you in NYC...feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions....

He was from Athens, GA, actually. He's been back there for a semester now and it's working out a lot better for him. Though he's not really a football fan. ;)

Thanks, churchmusicmom. Yeah, even though I don't love it here, I definitely appreciate the school. I mean, essentially I was given two years of a very solid education free, and that's enough of a reason to feel fondness for any institution. That said, though, I'm still on top of the world about going to Barnard next semester. During the transfer process I didn't even think about going there seriously since I considered it a very selective institution, but ever since I got my acceptance letter it's been the only thing on my mind, and I'm absolutely in love with the school. I will miss football and the excitement that is "game day," but I'm pretty sure being in NYC will more than make up for that. I'm really glad that it all worked out for your ex, primefactor. As someone who is transferring, I love to hear "success stories"... it's really very encouraging to know that I'm not the only one going through this type of thing and that it can in fact work out in the end.

oh, justwondernig, I want to be you right now. I can't imagine going back to UVM for another semster. I want to be at Barnard so badly... will you let me know how it goes when you start there are as a transfer (in... wow, must be under a week)? good luck! I'm sure it will be amazing!

I most definitely will let you know how it goes. Orientation actually starts tomorrow, so after I get through the nightmare that is program filing, moving in, etc, and finally start classes, I will make sure to post a little something about my experience. Hopefully very soon you'll be able to write a similar post for someone else! Good luck!
