Just give me a chance...

Hi all,

I am an Asian male from NJ. My GPA isn't the best but my standardized test scores are OK, and I am applying to all the top ivies. Please chance me!

Weighted GPA: 92.6
Unweighted GPA: 90.3 (about top 10% in my school)

SAT I: Math 780, Verbal 780, Writing 730, (1560/2290)
SAT IIs: Math IIC 800, Chemistry 800, Biology 780

AP Tests- all 5s in the following subjects: Calculus BC, Physics B, Statistics, Chemistry, English, US History, and Biology

I realize my GPA isn't the highest but I was hoping the colleges would see that my average is lower because I have taken harder AP classes since I was a freshman. In fact, I took AP Calculus BC in 8th grade and got an A and a 5. In freshman year, I took AP Physics B and AP Statistics. In sophomore year, I took AP Chemistry, and in junior year I took AP Biology, AP US History, and AP English. I earned Bs in Chemistry, Biology, History, and English which dragged by GPA down (the teachers were hard).

The other thing is that since I finished my school's math and science curriculum so early, I went to Princeton University to take math classes since 10th grade (I have taken MAT 214 and MAT 215 so far and earned A-s in both), and this year, I am taking math and physics at Princeton, MAT 211 and PHY103. Senior year I am also taking AP US Government and AP Economics.

For my extracurriculars, I went to NJ Governor's School of Engineering this summer, and I have taken part in math and science league all throughout high school. I have taken part in the American Regional Math League in Grades 10 and 11. I also have 150+ hours of volunteer work at the local hospital, and I am a member of NHS where I do tutoring. I have written a couple of articles for the local newspaper (nothing much though) and I have a research paper pending review in a financial publication.

Well, that's about it. I realize my low GPA is what is really hurting my chances, but I would like to know my chances for the following schools. Please be as honest as possible, I would appreciate all of your opinions greatly.

Please chance me for:

Princeton (first choice)
Harvard
Yale
MIT
Columbia
UPenn
Brown
Cornell
NYU
Rutgers
UVA
Rice
JHU

chill,

you have a solid chance at all of the schools you listed

AP calc bc freshman year?

yea.. dont worry bro, just take it easy, write good essays, and the rest depends literally on the mood of the admissions person that reads your application..

good luck

Thanks for the reply.

But I think my 90 unweighted could really be a problem because the people that apply to these schools all have 100s, right? Anyone else have anything else to add?

Whadup my fellow Asian bro. You sound like 10 times smarter than me.

Princeton (first choice)- Very Likely
Harvard - Mid-Reach (you don't really have a sports/physical activity and you sound like the "typical Asian genius" ;P)
Yale - Likely
MIT - Very Likely
Columbia - In no problem full scholarship lol
UPenn - In same as columbia
Brown - in same as columbia
Cornell - in same as columbia
NYU - lol way below your level is this your safety? In of course
Rutgers - hahahha safety am I right? In of course
UVA - In definitely
Rice - Definite in
JHU - Definite in

Yeah... you are pretty much in anywhere.

Mind chancing me back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/536417-chances-these-schools-3.html

Lol, you practically "go to" Princeton so you can remain calm with that. Columbia, Penn, Brown, Cornell, I'd say in. MIT maybe b/c you're really good at math, I'd say above the stereotype of an Asian who loves math/science, meaning that you're better than them at it. Everything else cept top top ivies (cept princeton of course), I'd say in.

I appreciate the positive responses a lot, but my guidance counselor was less than optimistic when I was talking with her the other day (mostly because of my low GPA).

HYPM is VERY unpredictable.
they are reaches for all.

^Agreed.

Anyone mind giving me some percentage chances?

Percentage chances, anyone? It would be much appreciated.

Anyone else?

Can I have some percentage chances for my schools? Please?

Lol... It's kind of hard to tell you percentages because they would just be estimates not actual calculations. Maybe some of the very smart MIT people here can do some calculations for you. ;P

Lol maybe, any smart MIT people (or smart people in general) willing to give me a percentage chance?

I would really appreciate hearing from a few more people.

USimperialist you are a great student remember that..

Princeton (first choice)- Mid-Reach
Harvard - High-Reach
Yale - Low-Reach
MIT - Mid-Reach
Columbia - High-Match
UPenn - High-Match
Brown - Mid Match
Cornell - High Match
NYU - Low Match
Rutgers - Safety
UVA - Safety
Rice - Low-Match
JHU - Safety

Despite the strong HYPMS applicant pool, there still aren't very many who can claim to have taken upper-level math and physics classes at Princeton. If that wasn't enough, they'll have little reason to doubt your intelligence after seeing your SAT scores. So, while the Ivies are unpredictable for anyone, don't stress too much over your GPA.

Princeton (first choice) - low reach/crapshoot
Harvard - low reach/crapshoot
Yale - low reach/crapshoot
MIT - high match
Columbia - match
UPenn - match
Brown - match
Cornell - match
NYU - safety
Rutgers - safety
UVA - safety
Rice - match/safety
JHU - match/safety

Thanks for chancing me!

As for you, although Ivy's are always unpredictable, I think you have great chances at all of them (Harvard, Yale, and MIT obviously being the hardest)

Haha before you took the SATs when was the last time you did Algebra 2 and below math? Calc BC as an 8th grader. Do you know anyone else who has done that?

^Never took algebra 2 or below, skipped over all of them. :)

Basically I just showed my guidance counselors my SAT scores in middle school, and took a math placement test, and then they were convinced to bus me to the high school to take Calc BC.

I'm totally pulling this out of my ear, sort of:

Harvard- 15% chance
Yale- 16% chance
MIT- 10% chance
Columbia- 25% chance
UPenn- 25% chance
Brown- Not sure
Cornell- 60% chance
NYU- 60% chance
Rutgers- In.
UVA- Not sure
Rice- 70% chance
JHU- Not sure
