Just got a Likely from Columbia but worried about Rescind?

Hey Everyone,

I was admitted EA to UChicago and just received a likely to Columbia College. I am very grateful for these opportunities but I am a little scared.

My school operates by a semester system, and when I applied to Columbia, I originally had Calculus 12 on my transcript for second semester. Once I found that the Calculus 12 class was too fast-paced for my taste, I switched out and opted to study the subject independently with a private tutor. UChicago was okay with this, but they have a pretty lax rescind policy. I heard that for other colleges, dropping a course looks extremely bad. However, I didn’t rescind because I was lazy – I just preferred to study it at my own pace.

Do you think Columbia will be understanding if I explain this situation to them? Or is this going to jeopardize my offer?

Thanks so much,

A very anxious high school student

Relax, I doubt it will make any difference, but if it makes you feel better let them know in an E-Mail.

I don’t think this will be a problem.

It’s just because I read threads about how a girl was kicked out of Dartmouth (in September) after dropping a course…

I wouldn’t worry since you’re still studying it-- just explain it clearly to them soon. Can I ask you how the likely letter came?

@justwaitingtoo I got it via email at around 3pm PST yesterday. It was titled “Your Columbia Application”.

Yeah, they are looking to see if you are challenging yourself. As long as you are still taking the course and learning the material, it does not seem like it would be an issue.

@Lily1985‌ I am not actually taking the course (online or in school). I am just independently studying the material with a private tutor, so I won’t be getting the high school credit. Is this really bad?

No chance of a rescind

I’d talk to any school and make sure they are OK with the change before you turn down other offers of admissions. Better safe than sorry.

Ask Columbia, but I doubt they would rescind.

Also, don’t shamelessly bump your own thread; I’m only going to delete it anyway.

Update: My admission officer took 7 business days to respond. I called the admission office three times, and each time the person answering the phone told me to take a different course of action.

Anyways, my admission officer finally responded today, and asked me if I was receiving credit from independent study. I replied no, and then she asked me for my full courseload this year. She hasn’t replied since. I am very anxious…

Are you doing STEM? If not I doubt it

Had I seen this I would have told you to wait until after you are admitted officially. At that point it would affect their yield to recind but I doubt they will anyway. I assume you told them that you will take the AP. Maybe you can ask your high school to give you independent study credit

@SaphireNY‌ Yeah, I really regret not doing it after I got in. I got admitted for gender studies, so not a stem student. No I’m not doing the AP, and my high school won’t be giving me independent study credit. In my email I mentioned that Uchicago was ok with me dropping the course – should I have not done that?

If they do rescind me, I guess I’ll be going to Chicago.

I think it should be fine

To a college, if you study on your own, it is like it doesn’t exist. Can you talk to your GC about getting independent study credit?

@bopper‌ There’s no way I can get independent study credit for this unfortunately,

Update: everything’s good! They said it was no big deal. Thanks for the advice everyone!

I would say ask your high school counselor exactly what the school had sent off for mid-terms. If the other grades havent changed, I doubt that will make a difference. It would have to have been a deciding factor for them if it would, and unless you based your whole application on your love for Calculus, dont worry about it
