i just got accepted with a $20k yearly scholarship. my parents have told me it has to be about as much as unc-chapel hill in order for me to attend tulane (which is $15k). do you think they would give me need based aid even though i received this merit scholarship. does tulane tend to do that?
thanks!

what were your stats (acts, gpa, rank) if you dont mind me asking?

I applied EA with the personal application (no essay or anything) and I havent heard from them yet

my stats:
Public nationally acclaimed competitive high school

Asian female

3.42 gpa uw
4.25 gpa w
top 25%

2140 SAT score
700 math II
730 literature

will have taken 7 APs
three "4"s and one "5" on AP exams taken

good ECs, editor of literary magazine, big on arts, leader of amnesty international

great essays

good (not great) rec letters.

i found out online in 12 days, and my letter came three days after that.

you didnt apply with the personal essay?

thats awesome btw, what do you plan on majoring in? i read on their website that as long as you get a 28 on the ACT if you are a louisiana native you are almost assuredly in and I got a 31 so im pretty sure im in

im excited to go there now

If you qualify for need based aid tulane will give it in addition to the merit scholarship. They meet something like 95% of need. In addition to the FASFA they also use the profile and take into account the value of your home.

yeah i dont know exactly

congrats on getting in :)

So, do they ignore the merit scholarships when they are considering you for need-based aid? Or do you have to qualify for more than your scholarship's worth of aid to get any extra?

For example, (and because I'm not sure I worded that well) if I qualified for, say, 15k, and I already have a 24k Presidential Scholarship, would I get the 15k and the 24k, or just the 24k?

The point of need-based aid is to give you what you need. No school would give you need-based aid if they've already given you everything you need.

That's what I thought, it was just wishful thinking on my part...

But if the scholarship doesn't cover what you need to be covered, wouldn't you still qualify for need-based?
I just got accepted (I got my letter today) and I got a 17k/yr scholarship, but that won't be able to cover what is leftover after EFC. Won't I still be able to get need-based?

In that case, you'd be fine.

My scholarship is probably the same or more than I would have received in need-based aid, but if yours is less than what you would receive without the scholarship, you'll get everything minus the EFC. (Or 97% on average, or whatever.)

i just emailed my question to them. apparently, need-based aid is not tied to merit based aid in any way. so even if you got merit aid, you will be given whatever your need is irregardless of that.
