Just got an e-mail...

Dear ,

Congratulations on your admission to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan! I am writing to tell you about the LSA Honors Program and to give you the opportunity to be considered for admission to the Honors Program. If you’re interested, please read this message carefully and submit your Honors essay as soon as possible.

The LSA Honors Program combines the matchless resources of a world-class research institution with a vibrant small community of students and faculty. Students in the program begin by taking Honors courses across the College during their first two years then specialize in Honors concentrations in fields of their choice. The Honors courses you will take enrich the already strong LSA curriculum by providing intensive faculty involvement, engaging discussions, and greater depth. The research you will do to complete an Honors concentration will take you beyond being a classroom student and make you a scholar, a genuine participant in the field you’ve chosen. In addition, Honors offers a rich program of extracurricular lectures, workshops, mini-seminars, and lunch-time chats with artists and scholars from around the world. Honors advisors help our students navigate the wealth of learning opportunities available at the university. We maintain a beautiful study lounge for Honors students right on the Diag and offer our students the option of living together in Honors Housing in the South Quad Residence Hall. Check out our website—www.lsa.umich.edu/honors—for more on the benefits of Honors.

Admission to the Program is highly competitive: fewer than one in eleven entering UM students is selected to join the Program each fall. The median GPA and SAT I score range of the entering class of Honors students in 2009 was comparable to that reported by Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Swarthmore, Chicago, and Duke. But we’re interested in more than just high test scores. We’re looking for students eager to make the most of what Michigan has to offer, and we’re dedicated to helping outstanding students make the most of their potential.

To help us decide if you are the kind of student who will take advantage of the opportunities we offer, we ask you to submit an essay based on one of the prompts below. You can also find the essay questions and directions for submitting your essay linked to our Prospective Student website: Honors - University of Michigan. The author of the best Honors essay will also be eligible for a $1,000 Honors Book Scholarship.

In addition to evaluating your Honors essay, we will also review the rest of your UM application. We will be looking for students who are ready to take charge of their intellectual lives and who are eager to participate in a vigorous intellectual community. We don't have hard-and-fast "cut-off" numbers for students we admit to the program since Honors students are characterized by their focus and engagement as well as by their achievements. There is no "typical" Honors student because Honors students' academic interests and extra-curricular activities vary widely.

While we do have deadlines specified below, please send us your essay as soon as possible. The sooner we receive your essay, the sooner we may be able to let you know that you have been accepted in the Program. Once we receive an essay, we typically evaluate it along with the student’s UM application within three weeks. Many students will be informed of our decisions early in the process though in some cases we will defer decisions until we know more about the state of the incoming class. The dates below are the latest we should hear from you. Please note that the Honors Program could fill before these deadlines.

March 26, 2010—While we urge you get your essay to us well before late March, as long as we receive your essay by March 26th, we promise to let you know our decision no later than April 23, 2010, a week before May 1st when your enrollment deposit, confirming that you will attend the UM, is due.

May 1, 2010—If we admit you into Honors on or prior to April 23rd, you must confirm by May 1 that you plan to join the Program. May 1 is also the last day that the Honors Program will accept essays from students admitted to LSA on or prior to April 15th.

I very much hope you will submit an essay. Please let us know if you have any questions about the Honors Program or the University of Michigan. We can be reached by email at honors.admissions@umich or by phone at (734) 647-4486.

I wish you a successful and rewarding senior year and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

does everyone get this e-mail or am i special? lol

What are your stats?

I think I read that the top 1500ish (so top 1/3 or so) admitted students to LSA get the option for LSA honors. From then, about 500 get in.

Qwerty got a source?

Posts here…

stats: 3.6 UW, top 15%, ACT: 35, SAT: 2250

several meaningless ECs, summer research, published science research paper

I got the same e-mail today.

I got the email as well. Don’t really plan on applying, though, unless UCs don’t work out.

when did you get accepted? So if I haven’t gotten the email yet does that mean I’m not eligible to apply for the honors program…?

i got accepted last week. and, to my knowledge, people who don’t get invited to apply to the honors program can still apply.

^Correct. Everyone admitted to LSA has the ability to apply for the program. The Honors committee only sends out invitations based on credentials. Visit the LSA honors site and you can find the extra essay that you have to submit.

To all those who just got accepted today:
When did you turn in your app? And when was your last item received?

is there an honors program for engineering?

okay so now i’m pi**ed. I got my decision less then two weeks after they received my application but I haven’t gotten the honors email! Does anyone know how they decide who to send the email to? Are the recipients of the email decided electronically? (i.e. higher then a xxxx SAT score or higher then a x.x gpa?) or is it based on the rigor of your application holistically?

I got it too

3.6 UW 4.35 W

OOS

Based on the posts, it looks like, if anything at all, they discriminate by SAT/ACT scores.

does being part of the honors program add any weightage to your gpa?
