JUST got deffered from RD :/

This is the email I got:

"Dear XXXX:

After multiple individualized and comprehensive evaluations of your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2011, we believe that you have something uniquely valuable to contribute to our campus. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date.

Your application will be re-evaluated, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this year’s freshman applicant pool. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than mid-April, 2011.

Please refer to the website Office of Undergraduate Admissions: FAQs about the Admissions Process for Deferred Students for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available.

Be sure your U-M ID XXXXXXX is on all materials submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues, and you have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful senior year.

Sincerely,

My complete application was received on December 5th and December SAT scores were received on the 22nd of December.

I remember earlier, during the EA round, people said there were two types of defferal letters - one in which you are doomed to get a rejection letter come April and one in which you had a good chance to get accepted. Which one does mine fall under as I can't seem to find that thread? Thanks for all your help and good luck to all....I really want to go here!

GO BLUE!

I got this one.

Dear MrWheezy:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2011. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, it is still good news. Your application is one of a group that remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than mid-April, 2011.

Please refer to the website [Office of Undergraduate Admissions: FAQs about the Admissions Process for Deferred Students](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available.

Be sure your U-M ID [MrWheezy’s ID] is on all materials submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Because you are in this select group, we hope your interest in Michigan continues, and we will keep you informed of our progress. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

Sincerely,

I am an international student.

To be honest, I think they might just randomize the whole email thing for all deferred students.

I’m an international student too.
That might be the case, however, I clearly remember a thread where people were comparing their EA email defferal letters, but I can’t seem to find it.
And it looked as if UM sent only 2 types of defferal letters as members on CC either had one or the other type of email. I might just be over-thinking, but it made sense to me.

This decision really took me by surprise.

I also received an e-mail an hour back:

haha, exactly what i got

My daughter applied EA (in state) and received the same letter as MrWheezy and compscifan. Earlier someone with the same letter as whatislove was accepted after an initial deferal in EA. It was thought that whatislove’s letter was the “good” kind. However, my daughter had a very strong app, so my hopes remain high that either letter could result in an eventual acceptance. Chins up!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/849639-three-types-deferral-letters.html</a></p>

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/831519-good-bad-deferral-letter.html</a></p>

Well it seems like they are three kinds of letters. The one I got and the one whatislove got are considered to be “good letters,” the bad ones are the letters that ask the applicant for their 7th semester grades. However, I doubt this really means anything though…

java97, your post has made me feel much better… thank you! I hope your daughter gets accepted along with all the others who got the same defferal letter!

Keep posting your defferal emails guys, lets compare them.

MrWheezy, in both of our letters they ask for our fall semester grades as well…

The thing is that our letters don’t require of us to send in our 7th semester grades unlike the other deferred letter quoted below.

"2:
Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we find that we will need additional information in order to make a decision.

The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several factors taken into consideration in evaluating a student’s admissibility. To give your application a fair evaluation, we will need your fall semester or second trimester grades. Because it is important that we receive these grades as soon as possible, please request to have a PDF of your completed semester or second trimester grades sent from the issuing institution to our office via an e-transcript vendor or to ecredentials@umich.edu if possible. Otherwise, please ask your high school counselor to fax a report of these completed semester or second trimester grades to our office at 734.936.0740.

We appreciate your interest in the University of Michigan and look forward to receiving the information requested. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by mid-April. Please do not hesitate to contact me, or to have your high school counselor call me, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your application.

The two threads I’ve posted has the three types of letters quoted. Again, I don’t think it really means much. They are probably the difference between a “probably” and a “maybe.”

Honestly, I hope they do mean something. I need hope to keep alive my dream of getting in to U-M.

Just wanna say I’m happy I was able to apply the last year before the Common App, haha.

I got defered also!

UMich is killing people on their waitlist, guess I can it is a slow death not outright rejection. :"(

Is everyone hearing so far international?

I just got deferred too :frowning: man this sucks… but after reading this thread it seems almost everyone got deferred… did anyone actually get accepted??? just wondering

Go to your Wolverine Access, decisions posted there. I just found out my d’s by accident! Darn it all she’s gonna kill me! I remembered with EA they said to go to Wolverine Access and if it said it was “down for maintanance” or something to that affect it meant your decision was being processed. So I looked there and saw…“Congratulations” I am so happy for her, but I feel so bad I know! Do I tell her I found out before her?

Don’t. Lie. Let the lie build inside of you as it consumes your soul.

Also, WA has hours of operation. So if u see down for maintenance it could just be that.

@jorabamama
if you are not lying where do u see the decisions at WA??? on the main page or what ??

I was deferred today. >.<

hurryup5, I don’t think MLD Woody meant that I’m lying about seeing it, I think they were referring to my dilema as to whether to tell my d that I saw her decision before she did. I know she will be devasted that I saw it first, I did not mean too, but I don’t know if I can fake not knowing.

Here is how I found it…

Go to Wolverine Access
New and Perspective Student Business
Application Status
View Decision

This is where I had hoped to see “down” which I heard meant your decision was coming…but instead I saw “Congratulations! You have been admitted to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts! Your official admission letter will be arriving shortly in the mail.”

Best of luck!

I think you should not tell her anything besides reminding her to check the WA. If she asks why you are telling her to, just call it intuition.
