Just got in off Waitlist

@Fallenchemist: I sent in my letter of interest a day ago (it turned out beautifully), and this recent development is really disappointing. I wonder if it will even matter now that the WL is already in use; I thought I had more time. That, and the only other kid from my school that actually accepted a place on the waitlist just got in today. Maybe I’m overreacting?

^^^Maybe overreacting a little, the big flood of results is obviously today so we will see. I think no one knew for sure how this year was going to turn out timing wise, as ST2 has frequently posted. A very strange year indeed.

I know how much you want Wash U, and it may still break your way. But even if it doesn’t, you will certainly find yourself in a good spot and can have a wonderful college experience. Have you already accepted another offer, since you have to let them know today? Where will you end up if not Wash U?

This is just the first round for the WL. There will be at least another 2 or 3 rounds before the calls are done. For example, if WashU desires to admit 100 people off the WL - they will call the first 100 people that fit their desired profile. Once they get answers from this first batch, admissions will re-evaluate their need. For arguments sake, lets say of the first 100 - 30 accept a spot. In the second round offerrs will be made to another 100, expecting the same acceptance percentage. This process will continue, with the number of offers reduced in later rounds, till the desired number of students have been added to the new freshman class.

I’ll be at NYU if WashU doesn’t come through for me. It’ll be a great experience either way; both are great schools, and New York City will be interesting in itself.

Not to say that I don’t still want WashU, but I won’t be too heartbroken if I don’t get in. I mean, I’ve grown used to the idea of getting my first taste of independence in NYC.

^^^Oh yeah, that will be an experience for sure! We will still hope for your first choice, but good to know you have a solid place otherwise.

Did anyone get into Olin yet? I havent seen anyone post any off waitlistings from Olin. @Sweartoscience: I live in NYC and its incredible. One of the best places to go to college without question. I just want a change of pace though
And an unranked waitlist means that they dont go back to grades/SAt score right?

Also, what time did most ppl get the call?

Unranked basically means they don’t have a pre-determined list of students numbered 1-1,500 (or however long the waitlist is) so they can’t just pick the top person off the list every time somebody decides not to attend.

Instead, I think most waitlist decisions are based on pretty much the same factors as regular decision. If a poli.sci. major turns down the college though, they might be more inclined to bring in another poli.sci. major from the waitlist, and so on. Grades/SAT are still definitely important, but no more than before you’re waitlisted, if I’m not mistaken. ECs, hooks, and so on also still count.

The meaning of “unranked” does vary from school to school though… sometimes it means that you actually are “ranked,” but the school doesn’t feel like telling you where you stand. Other times, it means they’ll reconsider all waitlistees before deciding. Some schools even pull people off the waitlist by random numbers…

So which one of those does WUSL use if anyone knows? Also, does anyone know the rough number of students offered spots off the waitlist?

Pretty sure WashU goes the route of my second paragraph. Think of it as pretty similar to RD — they have things they’re looking for, and they work through their options till they decide on a group. Roughly, maybe 100 people will come off the waitlist? There’s really no way to say though. Could be less, could be a lot more with the economy and all.

Unranked at WashU means that WashU is looking for the missing pieces of the puzzle. Yes, it is quite similair to RD admissions. But, at this stage the aim is to fill the pieces that were not completely filled at the end of RD. What is needed? - more people in engineering, art, science - whatever is light will have priority. Based on the same criteria as RD - GPA, standard tests, recomendations, ECs, essays etc. Just how do these fit into the areas that need additional freshman clas members. The entire situation is re-evaluated after each round of WL offers. This is just the first round, there will be at least 2 - 3 more rounds.

To those who have been admitted off the wait list so far: What is the time window for you guys to make up your decision whether to attend WashU? is it May 1st ( haha today ><) or is it more like a week or so?

thx!

I think someone mentioned it was 24 hrs, but Im not 100% sure

The ones I know of last year were given 24 hours - but of course timeframes are always subject to negotiation!

wait, what?!
you have 24 hours to decide after being taken off the waitlist?

nooob -well, that shouldn’t be such a surprise. One would have had weeks to think about what one would do if accepted off the waitlist, and this is a process that by its nature has to be over with as quickly as possible.

Well… sent in the “will not attend” letter today – a 100% financial decision and very tough to drop it into the mail box. Good luck to all you waitlisters!

The 24 hours is not an absolute and will be extended to a reasonable time upon request. Remember that the object is to get answers as quickly as possible, so additional WL offers can be made if needed to fill the class.

Has anyone heard from Olin yet??

No no no haha its not 24 hours. The guy on the phone told me a week from when I received the material, so its May 7th for me.

Can the accepted WL-ers list their intended major please?
