Just got into the Northeastern University Scholars Program!

Pretty much what the title says. Is this program worth doing?

Congrats!

My son also got into University Scholars in the EA round. He will be going to Boston in late March for their University Scholars weekend. Northeastern provides airfare and an overnight (for student only within a certain price range of airfare; parents pay their way). I’m sure you’ll be contacted soon about making arrangements to attend.

He hasn’t decided whether or not to attend Northeastern; the two day program will likely help make his decision.

I’m sure someone will come along and talk up the opportunity to be a Scholar. It certainly sounds like an amazing opportunity.

Have you read the Scholars website?

hey i got in too! hope ill see you guys in march. ive done some research on the program (mostly reading old cc threads on it). it’s definitely worth considering. the trip is free so might as well go to that and them make your decision. from what i understand, it only takes 1-2% of applicants (not admits, applicants) so is highly selective. ive seen threads where current students are like "yeah, my friends and i turned down “insert ivy/mit” to come here and it’s great. i did apply to a few ivies and mit and if i get in to any of them with some money offered then sorry neu, but im still looking at it. i also looked at the credentials of some of the people who got in in past years. it’s nothing to sneeze at. look for yourself

Is it a full tuition scholarship?

Yes, full tuition plus grant for international coop/

@arnbobo and @ahmedh It would be great if you guys could post stats for all future potential scholars to relate to on CC.

Congratulations!!

We are starting to plan the scholars weekend now. Everyone I’ve talked to so far is very excited about hosting perspectives - the impressiveness of the weekend really sold most of us.

And it looks like there’ll be much less snow than last year.

@arnbobo and @ahmedh Can you guys post your stats?

Is the program worth doing? Of course it is.

Is it worth doing for you? It depends what other opportunities you have been offered at other colleges.

It also depends what major you are planning to do. Northeastern is much stronger in some areas than others.

Any scholars today?

No, they were all announced in December and February.

How was scholars weekend this past weekend?

@missbwith2boys @ahmedh

My DS16 enjoyed it- most of his feedback was really positive. He is still making his decision but I think the weekend events really solidified his choice. I will be surprised if he doesn’t commit to Northeastern.

The co-ops seem like a big plus to me, but the scheduling of those are actually his biggest stumbling block.

He’s heading off this morning to visit/interview with his other choice- he’s in the running there for a full ride. I still think he will choose Northeastern over the other choice, but we will see.

@missbwith2boys-it took us a bit of time to wrap our heads around the coop schedule. There is a Northeastern Parent board where the how’s and when’s are frequently discussed as well. Boils down to grasping that you pay for (or get FA) for 8 semesters regardless of 4 year or 5 year coop cycle. If AP or duel enrollment credits are applied, that could save a semester. My D is grad in Dec after 7 semester with 3 coops.
Once the kids get on campus and start connecting with other students who have gone through the process, they usually jump in full throttle. Coops, summer sessions, study abroad, dialogues abroad somehow they learn how to schedule it.

My son is a first year scholar who came in with a lot of AP credits. He is double majoring in economics and civil engineering and will be able to complete both majors and three coops in 5 years. All paid for by the scholarship. Additionally, he spent Spring Break in San Francisco working for a non profit. All expenses were covered as a scholars benefit. The scholars program (in addition to covering tuition for 8 semesters) also covers the expense of a dialogue. My son is going to India for 5 weeks this summer (and taking two classes) at no expense to him or us. Technically, the scholarship covers 8.5 semesters to allow for a dialogue. He is also doing amazing research as a freshman! Honestly, we didn’t understand the coop process either but the school does a very good job preparing the students and helping them through it. These students will graduate with 12-18 months real world job experience. My son will do his first coop next spring.
He had a number of full tuition scholarship offers and chose NU. We are all very glad he did. The opportunities are endless. Good luck to you all!

@Bangorian
My D is a 4th year scholar (first cohort of scholars) and has had an amazing experience at NU. The opportunities have been absolutely wonderful. However, the scholars dialogue, for instance the India trip, still counts as a half semester of scholarship used. However, there are no costs to the student or families since certain dialogues are sponsored by scholars. However, if your student does a regular dialogue trip, then you have to pay the DOC fees (forget what it stands for but basically it’s the room and board equivalent -Around $2500). My D went on two scholars dialogues last summer and it basically was the equivalent of one semester of tuition. (She’s one of the TAs for the India trip this summer, so she must know your son already.)

I’m going to have to disagree with you as I have confirmed this in many different ways, most importantly, the financial officer Ben Parsons. If the student goes on a Scholars sponsored Dialogue, the student still gets his 8 additional semesters of tuition. It works out to 8.5 semesters. I actually still have the email from him. I suppose it is possible this is a change for the newer scholars.

Hmmm, I’ll have to check with Ben. Her tuition was credited as paid, but I would love to know that she has another full semester of tuition coming… The program has developed in the four years (like free alt spring breaks which she just did) so I will check again. Good to know.
