Amherst or WashU??????????????????

Could you maybe give us pros/cons? Or price tags? If it was me picking I would pick Wash U, but they are both very prestigious schools and I don't think you can go wrong with either in terms of academics. Do you like the Midwest or Boston more? What are you majoring in? There are so many variables here!

Amherst, while not in Boston, is in a truly great college town area. It's part of the five college consortium and is consistently ranked as one of the top three liberal arts colleges in the country (and sometimes #1). You will have an excellent academic experience and an extraordinary alumni network of support. I don't know much about WashU, so I can't comment on it.

I would go Amherst. Where are you from?

Amherst by far in my opinion. Its better in every way: MUCH better reputation with recruiters, better reputation with grad schools, more undergrad resources, tighter community, etc. I also think it has a better social life, but that is personal taste.

i dont know what i want to major in at all.....

which school would have a tougher work load (not that that is major factor)?

I'd go to Amherst.

Amh is in like Top 5 LAC's. Both challenging academics. Amh smaller, right?

sorry #2 behind Williams. This is as good as the Big H, man. Your ticket is punched - cash it in!

(full disclosure - yes, and my daughter is WL as Wash U! but we visited Amh, Williams, Midd and I pushed her to apply there. didn't want to go northeast. SAT CR was low anyway)

I would vote Amherst, but that's based largely on a personal preference for LACs. Really, I feel you haven't given enough information on your particular situation for us to help you. Both are top-notch schools, and I don't think either decision would be a mistake.

"Don't know what to major in..." Sounds like my son who just finished 2nd year at LAC Wabash in Indiana. Loves it. even the col president knows him by name. Has dinner and luch with profs and visiting speakers. History major at present but may change. At LAC doeesnt matter. Specialize in grad school. S will probably get an MBA somewhere.

Based on relative prestige alone (because you provide no other factors), Amherst!

The h is silent.

Asking people on CC is not the way to decide where to go, unless you just want a bunch of biased opinions. I assume you visited both schools. If so, then choose the school that you feel fits you best. Nobody but you knows that. My guess is that most responders have not even visited both schools.

So ST2 says choice between Harvard vs. Cornell would be a toss up. And a lot of people do see it that way. Having applied for and attended grad school and being in the workforce 30 years and about to have second kid in college, I respectfully dissent.

amherst, duh.

amherst is a superior school, will provide you with a much better education, a much better environment, a much better social scene, increased incidence of mentoring, a closer/more identifiable community, a happier student body, a more beautiful location, and better job prospects upon graduation.

amherst has washu beat in almost every single category, i couldn't imagine picking washu over amherst unless you were REALLY into conducting research, the one area washu would be better.

2ishunpoor - You certainly have the right to dissent. Also have been to grad school have 2nd kid in a top college - first graduated from a top college a year ago. Both turned down "higher rated" schools for schools they felt were a better fit. Ended up being a great decision for both of them. So yes, Harvard vs Cornell can be a toss up - depending on how the school fits the student.

Excellent point - and I think you win! My son was accepted at Trinity in San Antonio which I think is another hidden southern treasure, and certainly more recognized than Wabash. But my son could not be happier. He knew when he returned from a visitation weekend that he just fit in! So to heck with marketing. panache, and so-called reputations - best fit is the best criteria. And that's just a gut feel thing from going and checking them both out.

All else being equal, I'd vote Amherst. But you really must consider fit. The schools are vastly different.

yea this isnt close..Amherst

the funny thing is that you got into Amherst and waitlisted at WashU, but since WashU waitlists everyone I guess its not so surprising..I have still yet to meet anyone in person who actually got into WashU

by the way I would go to Cornell over Harvard
