Hello everyone,

Today I received my SAT Subject Test Scores from the January examination.

They were 670 US History and 770 Spanish Language. Are these good?
Should I mail them to all my prospective transfer schools? (Besides the ones that require them?)

I was expecting an 800 on the Spanish one, albeit I'm not a Native speaker. I haven't taken US History since 2 years, so maybe the admissions people will consider that? (Eek, I did study before the test, though.)

Any advice? Will it help or hurt to send these to Ivies that didn't ask for them? I called admissions offices and they generally said to send in the scores if I feel they make me or my abilities stand out. I wonder if this is such a case, or rather, if the admissions officers will be annoyed at the extra information (or again, delighted to have more standardized testing from my end?)

Thanks so much for your help!

Spanish score is really good, especially for a non-native speaker. Definitely send that one in.

History score is OK, but not really standout; subject tests tend to have higher scores than the regular SATs. A 700 is mid 70’s percentile for the US History test, if I remember right.

What major are you looking at? Also, Ivies require 2 SAT-IIs, and some need 3.

History and Cognitive Science major. The Ivies I’m applying to either require 2 scores or none (I’ve already sent them to the ones which require the scores.) The thing is, I’m wondering if they’d appreciate at all the fact I took these exams just this past January, without exactly the typical high-schooler preparation.

My high school ACT scores are just average, so I was hoping that in this standardized-testing-score age these SATs might supplement my application. Now I’m not so sure, about the History score, at least. I don’t want to come off as a mediocre student.

I don’t think it’s low enough that you should just throw it away-it’s still a good score, just not exceptional. You should still retake it if you have time, though, just in case; I went up over a hundred points in my Writing score, for instance, the second time I took the SATs.

Ah, I’ve absolutely no time to take the SAT (never took it!) and no time to retake the Subject Tests. Just wondering if the History score will do anything for me.

If the rest of your particulars are good, I don’t think it’s low enough to hurt you.

If you are a squeaker, it might.

Sorry if I sound vague, but this stuff is honestly very fluid and there aren’t very many absolutes, especially with Ivies.

Thank you for the insights. I would appreciate some more opinions, if anyone’s willing to pitch in.
