Just got off wait list--conflicted!!

D1 got voice mail today indicating that she's been admitted off the wait list. This comes 24 hrs. after we sent in her deposit for Maryland (College Park Scholars program). Tulane was always her dream/reach school and after having fallen out of love once she was put on the wait list, she's now considering it again. They have given her until Wednesday to decide. (We've asked for more time so we can get to NOLA for a visit...she's been to TU in the summer but not during the school year). The larger question is whether she will somehow have a "leg down" on opportunities in Washington and public policy jobs because she's not going to school in Washington. That's a big calling card for Maryland with its access to DC and internships on the hill, with federal agencies and trade associations. I've told her to follow her heart, that opportunities will come from various places and people she meets along the way. I think she'd be extraordinarily happy at Tulane ( and everyone she knows there is having ana amazing experience) but its not my decision. Tell me something that can break this logjam!

Don’t forget there are local and state opportunities in NOLA/Louisiana, plus of course she can still try for jobs in DC. I am sure being relatively local would make it easier, but there is tons more competition for those slots as well, between Georgetown, GWU, American, UMCP, Johns Hopkins just to name the first that come to mind. And, of course, she could decide on a completely different major. It happens all the time. Going with the school that seems to fit best overall is usually the best bet.

Frankly, I wouldn’t worry about another visit though. They are in finals and it wouldn’t be typical anyway. There would be more students around, just totally stressed out!

Congrats on her getting in off the wait list. Frankly I thought there might not be any this year. Just goes to show you never know.

Well here is your tie breaker, along with the other things listed on the admitted thread: a semester in Washington DC! The best of both worlds! See the link here:

Reposting what I said in the admitted students thread for your daughters consideration Maybe the opportunity to take a class from Melissa Harris-Perry: Professor | Author | African-American | Intellectual or James Carville or [The Center for Public Policy Research · The Murphy Institute](http://murphy.tulane.edu/programs/public-policy/) where she can get this internship [Judith Kelleher Schafer Summer Internship Grants · The Murphy Institute](http://murphy.tulane.edu/programs/un...e/internships/). Just a thought

At the risk of being too anecdotal, i attended Tulane and then went to Harvard for my Master’s in Public Policy, spent 6 years in a great job in Washington, and now I am VERY happy with my career in public service. Congratulations in your admission in a year in which many high caliber students did not get accepted. Just out of curiosity, did you indicate that you would commit to Tulane if admitted off of the waitlist? That’s usually how it works.
