<p>I have just been rejected from the University of Florida, which was my first choice school. It's so hard to write this right now, as I'm trembling from the shock. UF was the perfect school for me with its low-tuition and high standards of academics. </p>
<p>What hurts me the most is that some of my classmates with almost no extracurriculars and with lower test scores and GPA have been accepted (I don't mean to sound arrogant or anything by saying this, but I am at a loss of words at the moment).</p>
<p>My GPA is not super-high but is still in the range. However, I have shown a significant increase of GPA throughout the years, where my UF GPA of junior year was 4.64. I have always taken the most rigorous courses available and held several leadership positions.</p>
<p>Now, there are two reasons why I believe my appeal would cause in the reconsideration of my application:
1. Around 300 community hours (due to certain complications, my community hours could not be recorded on my transcript by the time my application was sent. I had to send in my transcript with 0 community hours.)
2. A senior semester GPA of 4.7 (this is an indication of the persistence of the upward trend which I've achieved)</p>
<p>Do you guys think the factors which I listed would provide the admissions committee with sufficient reasons to reconsider my application?</p>
<p>Also, how do you start this appeal process? I have tried searching but could not find any information on it. Any links or explanation of this process would be appreciated.</p>
<p>I don’t know about the appeal process, but I just want to say I know how you feel.</p>
<p>I have a good GPA, took the most challenging coursework I could, had decent extracurriculars and standardized test scores and I’ve always written pretty good essays. I was flat out denied.</p>
<p>It seems the admissions decisions are so random, because I’ve heard of so many people that got in with so much less than me. I just don’t feel I have enough of a case to appeal.</p>
<p>My D was rejected from Florida as well. I don’t know if there is an appeals process, but you should call admissions. Come May when a lot of kids are going elsewhere, who knows? But it’s never good to hang your hat on one school. Florida gets a lot of good applicants and turns away a lot of good kids; I’ve seen kids get into Ivy schools but they were turned down from Florida.</p>
<p>It feels like my life is over right now. I’m very depressed at the moment. I am willing to go all the way and do whatever it takes to get admitted. </p>
<p>Can you guys please tell me if my case is enough to make an appeal?</p>

I understand that UF is a school with high standards and rejects many Ivy league quality applicants. But what I don’t understand is how certain people with low stats and barely any extracurriculars can get accepted, given that they reject many Ivy league quality applicants.</p>
<p>^I can sympathize with your disappointment. I agree it doesn’t look fair. But I think from the school’s perspective, they don’t want to accept only students with similar, high stats. UF, like all other schools, is probably concerned with their yield, and too many kids with high stats would represent a risk that a lot of those kids will go elsewhere, lowering their yield, and thus their rankings. Other than that, it is a crapshoot. I hope you feel better soon!</p>

Yes. The only thing that was probably lacking was the community service hours, which were not recorded by the time I sent the application due to certain complications. But I self reported my community hours in the application.</p>
<p>I got accepted today and from what I’m observing from kids at my school is that almost everyone is getting in. I had a 3.8 UF GPA, 2060 on my SAT (1370 math + reading), and around 500 hours. Granted, I’m a minority from Miami and was born in Cuba (my essay was on the hardships I experience in coming to this country). Point is UF is very random when it comes to accepting kids. I do think they are lenient with underrepresented minorites in the Miami area. I’m telling you, there are kids in my class with 3.0 GPA’s and SAT scores in the 1100’s and they got accepted. However, UF claims they have high standards and this is vindicated by the facts posted on their website.</p>
<p>I read it and I couldn’t believe how many examples it gave of top applicants getting rejected by schools that otherwise should’ve been a no-problem-acceptance. It lists reasons too. Very good book.</p>
<p>Haha well they didn’t like a Cuban living in Chicago with decently high stats! UF has a very high instate population, 97%, 3% OOS. Can’t argue with that though; that’s what the state schools are for.</p>
<p>If UF is where you really want to go, try applying as a transfer student.</p>
<p>A few of my friends who didn’t get accepted went to a community college for a semester then applied as a transfer student.</p>
<p>Also, if you get you are a Florida resident and get your A.A. degree and Florida institution HAS to accept you. That’s just an option. The A.A. degree takes about two years to get, 3 semesters (and summer) if you really want to speed up the process.</p>

<p>Yes, we have heard of 3 kids being deferred as well. Last year my girlfriend’s son was deferred and did get in. He was told in March. Good luck.</p>
<p>Also, to the above poster, the articulation agreement states that “A” Florida college has to accept you with your AA but it could be any school in Florida. UF has become increasingly difficult to get in as a transfer. Last year, many business majors were turned away with 4.0 GPA’s. Budget cuts have made it really tough.</p>
<p>Thanks! UF is not my first choice, but I was still considering it. I was/wasn’t surprised that I was deferred. I thought my overall application would have gotten me accepted, but I am out of state, so I know that went against me.</p>
