Just got the low- down on merit scholarships

Since many folks on this thread have been wondering what is going on with the scholarships this year, I decided to call the admissions office and see for myself.

First off, Bentley will still offer the 1/3 1/2 and full scholarships. Here is the new twist. They are also offering smaller scholarships in the amount of 5k and 10k. The admissions officer did make a point to let me know that full scholarships are very rare and are only offered to a “handful” of students, so do not hold your breath on that one.

The officer said that the 1/3 and 1/2 scholarships would be about the same amount. I did not want to push, but how can that be? If there is a 1/2 scholarship, isn’t that a fixed amount? It does seem like they are being a bit vague.

I believe what is happening is that the 1/3 and 1/2 scholarships will not be quite 1/3 and 1/2 but pretty close and they are offering the smaller amounts in lieu of the straight 1/3 and 1/2.

I guess they want to offer more scholarships to more folks.

Thanks @euve69 !

“The officer said that the 1/3 and 1/2 scholarships would be about the same amount”

Maybe they mean the number of offered 1/2 and 1/3 tuition scholarships will be the same. Perhaps they reduce the amount of full tuition scholarships and spread those amounts out to a larger pool of students in smaller increments. This makes sense to me. I’m guessing the full tuition scholarships are not enticing the Super high stats students who are probably choosing more prestigious schools. Therefore they could probably entice the next rung of students by giving them a $5k or $10k discount per year. At $45,000 a year tuition they can give out three $10,000 scholarships and 3 $5,000 scholarships, that may yield a few students versus a full tuition scholarship to a student that prefers to full pay at Tufts or Georgetown.

suzyQ7 hit the nail on the head! It’s all about enticing the right amount of kids.

God bless the people who can afford to go to Bentley. COA is pushing $70K/year. Knocking off 5-10K is still a huge cost. People have lots of money out there.

From a school standpoint, as long as people are breaking down the door to come in you can keep raising the price. Bentley has no problem filling the classrooms. It is a good school with a lot going for it.
