Dear Student,

I am writing, on behalf of the Council of Undergraduate Deans, to inform
you of an important change to Tele-BEARS for undergraduate students
effective Fall 2009.

During Phase II of Tele-BEARS, undergraduate students will not be able to
add a course if they are already enrolled and/or waitlisted in 16 or more
units. For example, if you have 15 units, you will be allowed to add a
4-unit class, bringing the total to 19 units. However, if you have 16
units or more, you will not be able to add or waitlist for another course
during Phase II. Please note that both enrolled and waitlisted units are
included in the total unit count.

You will be able to enroll up to your School or College maximum during
the adjustment period. (The 10.5 unit maximum for Tele-BEARS Phase I,
as well as the unit maximum for your college/school during Adjustment
Period, remain unchanged.)

The Council of Undergraduate Deans
(UC Berkeley :: Division of Undergraduate Education) approved this change so
that as many students as possible can reach full-time enrollment and,
perhaps, reduce the number of waitlisted units. The campus has noticed
that with more students, increasing demand, and limited supply of courses,
more students are having difficulty with attaining minimum units by the
start of instruction, as evidenced by a marked increase in waitlisted
units during the last two terms. This change hopefully will ensure that
more students are in at least 12 units by the end of Phase II and will
be able to settle into their classes shortly after the beginning of
instruction. We will evaluate the change at the conclusion of Tele-BEARS
enrollment for Fall 2009 to see how well it meets this objective.

This change in Phase II access means that the process of planning your
course schedule is more critical than ever. Phase I of Tele-BEARS for
Fall 2009 will start on April 13, and I strongly encourage you to meet
with your major or college adviser as soon as possible to help you plan
your enrollment process.

Sincerely,

Great, once you enroll/waitlist 16 units you cannot register anymore until the adjustment period.

I personally think it is fair - I know of students who sign up for 23 units holding spots in several classes b/c they aren’t sure what they really want to take. However, I do sympathize with those who are waitlisted for courses they really need and signed up for other courses in case those waitlisted ones don’t work out - especially if you need to be enrolled in at least 12 or so for financial aid.

Yea. It’s not affecting me next semester…but may affect me in the future. OMG)(#)!@

i will be a sophomore but by units i am a junior. will this new policy apply to me as well then?

I’m actually happy about this as it’ll make people sign up for the classes they actually want instead of just getting 20 units and dropping most of them in the 2nd week when it’s too late for anyone else to get in.

I agree with biomech.

I actually like this change in the way telebears works. My first semester at Cal, I saw how ridiculous some people who had good telebears appointments were, signing up for courses “just in case” they didn’t get the courses that they want.

What happened to the students who got ****ty telebears appointments? They got shafted.

^they get more shafted by this thing.

People with ****ty labs are still going to have tough times getting into their labs and discussions. They are going to get wait listed for them anyway and use up a chunk of their unit registration, and in the end when they have <13 registered units and their wait lists fall through, they will be screwed
