everyone says that the class of 2008 is reeeally competitive and it'll be really hard to get into ivies and such, i was just wondering how competitive they are in comparison to 2007 and whether or not my chances are dramatically decreased by being in the class of 08

I personally think that the class of 07 was MUCH smarter...
in my school and the ones around my region, the 07 class was a lot smarter than the 08 (my class :-))

yeah that's true, the class of 08 (my class >.<) is notorious for being stupid at my school lol

for my school that's the class of '10 :D

By numbers, the class of 2008/2013 is larger than the class of 2007. It doesn't matter how smart they are, it's the sheer number of applications.

ohh gotcha... shouldn't each college be accepting more people then, to accommodate everyone?

How could you possibly determine the answer to your question? And what do you mean by competitiveness?

It's possible that SAT scores are higher now, since the new version of the test has been around for a few years now. However, even if this increase has taken place, it doesn't mean that a member of Class '08 will have more difficulty getting into a top school this fall than a Class '07er had getting in last fall. It just means that the general applicant pool will have higher scores.

With regards to ECs and awards: I'm sure new awards are popping up all over the place, but the fact remains that there are still 20 National olympiad finalists, 40 ISTS finalists, a handful of Siemens Finalists, a handful of Scholastic Key awards, and 86 TASP and 75 RSI alumni. Every class has a president, every orchestra has a concertmaster, every club has a captain; these positions will be filled by the class of 2008, as they have been for decades before we were even born. If competitiveness is measured by the prestige and magnitude of a class' ECs and awards, I doubt it will change much for our class.

Now, even if it is true that our class is the biggest one yet, I still don't see your chances being affected drastically. Admit rates at HYPS have remained pretty stubborn in the last two-three years, hovering in the 10-15% range. Princeton's might even ascend as it opens its new set of residential colleges. So, in terms of "sheer numbers," I don't think competitiveness will fluctuate drastically, any more than it has in the past.

At my school, 08 is definitely the smart class. 09ers are slackers!!

ye our 08 class is probably one of the strongest in school history

My school's '08 class is much smarter than the last few years. Like 30 out of 350 people got 2300+ on the SATs.

The class of '08 had fewer NHS members than any other class.

...at my school at least.

This will, without a doubt of any expert I've heard, bethe hardest year in history to get into a top US college. It is a combination of sheer numbers and the internet age, everyone wants a piece of ivy.

Numbers went way down at many schools last year and we'll see more at or under a 10% acceptance rate.

Bottom line, if you do not have a hook, any ivy will be harder than ever, and unlikely for the vast majority, for several more years.

BOTH classes (08 and 07) are equally mixed w/ geniuses, idiots, and people inbetween.

plain and simple.

For the class of 08 in my school, i find a lot of people very competitive. we fought for many AP classes, unlike the classes before us.

Well, for my current HS's, it seems class of 08 sucks compared to the other ones...but what kinda question is that? The only change is gonna be more people applying to top colleges, making admissions slightly more competitive

Our school's 08 class is SUPER competitive...which doesn't say much as our entire school is basically that way.

considering harvard and princeton both got rid of their EA/ED, yale might be hell this year

HAha, so who here is applying Yale EA

iono but in our school. 07 were the geniuses.but 08 is more competitive than any other class we had up to date.
