Just how crippling can a bad GPA be?

well the 25% is 1370 - so while 1400 is not "low," it isn't going to help him get in.

They must put a premium on scores b/c I have schools on my list I consider at least equivalent to g-town and im in 50s i think. maybe my memory has distorted these thoughts though...

Bringing the SAT up will help, but I mean its going to be VERY hard for them to overlook that GPA.

dude if u have a bad gpa then ur ****ed. thats so important. good luck...

yea, lets stop being naive about this. you guys arn't getting into any top colleges with 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 unless you can catch a football or can put a ball through a hoop or saved 1,000,000 starving african children through countless hours of effort.

32 act, 3.3 gpa, good debater on paper (state champ, on all-american team)

is that in the gutter or do i got a shot?

"or saved 1,000,000 starving african children through countless hours of effort."

are the countless hours necessary? i saved twice this many starving children in se asia but i didnt take me too long...

yes - and i thought it was common knowledge that saving people in africa was better than saving people in asia...

but hey - i guess we all can't be saints right?

my father got into georgetown for grad school with a 1.8 gpa from northern virginia community college, was one of the first students to recieve a phd in economics from the universty and has since gone on to be published in hundreds of medical journals, and travels around the country giving speechs at medical conferences.

someone whom I know personally got into yale with a 2.9 gpa, in the early 90's based on nothing but the knock out essay he wrote.

it's not impossible

i guess not...i really thought that was a killer EC of mine though. Guess I will go write my 3rd pulitzer winning book...

Okay, I have a question. I've got a 1450 math/verbal
I have a 4.0 unweighted, 4.2 weighted, and plenty of AP classes, ECs, etc etc etc. However, i go to a small, Catholic high school. This is the best class we've ever had, and even with a 4.2 weighted GPA, im 6th in the class of 55. will the low class rank kill me?

hmmm, well seeing as how over 10% of the people in your class have an unweighted 4.0, yea it could be a problem

how come? we have a really good class for once this year. would it look shady or somethin?

and one other question-
we dont usually do a 4.0 scale GPA. if you get an A in every class in your entire high school career, dont you get a 4.0? because theres like 6 of us who have.

so is it like...6 people tied? how could someone have over a 4.0 unweighted - unless you give 4.3's for A+s?

nobody had OVER a 4.0 unweighted- there are 6 of us who have exactly 4.0. Weighted, our GPAs are over 4 and thats why im 6th.

6 people out of 56 with an uw 4.0 is called GRADE INFLATION. I don't care who is in your class, no school should have over 10% of their kids in a class with all A's in every single class of their high school career. My school has 1 out of 173. The 20th ranked kid has about a 3.4 uw.

I also have a 3.0 gpa, fairly low SAT's (1930), and am considering applying to Gtown for 2 reasons. Firstly, I started my own business (<a href="http://www.eskaper.com%5B/url%5D">www.eskaper.com</a>), it launches in mid-November, and honestly I think that'll show that there is some promise in me. Secondly, interviews are required, and I know thats something I could thrive in. Maybe I'm being naive, but hey why not give it a shot.

yeah,

you're being naive.

WOW.... just reading this thread and the egotistical A**hole comments left by some conceited individuals almost made me vomit all over my key board. My brother AND sister both got into Georgetown in the recent past with lower GPAs, solid SATs, and good ECs... so all of you out there with "below normal" stats... don't listen to these tools and just apply. Honestly.

ncb,

we're not talking about people who are "below normal" stats where like... they have a 1350 and a 3.6 gpa. We're talking about people who have like a 3.0 and a 1300 on their SATs. for someone to get in with barely a B average, and below the 25%ile SATs just isn't going to happen unless they can help get their basketball team to the final four.

so all of you who think you can get into Gtown with significantly below the average stats of georgetown admittees, go for it. Georgetown wants you to apply so it can drive down its admit percentage. I'm just trying to save you the time of filling out the applicantion - but do what you want. Just don't be upset when you get the little envelope.
