Just how important are standardized test scores?

My first attempt at ACT: composite = 30, English = 34, reading = 27, math = 29, science = 28.
My second attempt at ACT: composite = 30, English =32, reading = 23 (AWFUL!!!), math = 36, science = 27.

I'm still very angry about that second attempt. Had I been able to at least maintain my old scores while improving the math, I might have gotten a 32 composite or something.

But here's my question: just how important are these scores? Do they ruin my chances of getting into a school like, say, Brown? What would an admissions officer think upon seeing these scores?

^Nope. They’re decent. Scores are just used to weed out a majority of the applicants and the rest is passion!

Okay. Thank you!

You have no chance at ivies, but at others you have an ok chance

A 30 composite score is a bit low for the ivies, but you still have a chance if the rest of your application is what they are looking for in a candidate. I would not let it stop you from applying, but also apply to equally good, but less competitive schools. I am in the same boat actually:
