Hey, all those commuters may be listing to educational CDs in their cars instead of playing beer pong all evening, so they may be BETTER students.

If a school is so good, people will come from all over the place go there. Many random people who happen to live nearby won’t get in. If half of the student body is commuting, many of them are just going because it’s the closest school. Of course, if people are renting off-campus apartments becuase they can’t get dorms it’s a different story.

US News aims to measure the academic quality of universities. They make no claims whatsoever about student life, and you cannot judge the rankings based on football programs or commutes.
Fixed.

Shades of the old saw “That place is so overcrowded, no one goes there anymore.”

Use USNWR, but not only USNWR.

I like this one:
[“The Washington Monthly College Rankings” by The Editors](<a href=“http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2006/0609.collegechart.html]"The”>http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2006/0609.collegechart.html)

Methodology:
[“College Guide” by The Editors](<a href=“http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2006/0609.methodology.html]"College”>http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2006/0609.methodology.html)

UC’s are still the best. However, if you look at the The Washington Monthly College Guide: Turning the U.S. News rankings upside-down they specifically mention, “We love Texas A&M.”

No way. Texas A&M is ranked higher in almost every major, beginning with engineering and business. UC-Davis is not even close.

what about Clemson, do people think that it is “ranked” right as of right now?

I lol’ed.

Is that why ARWU, which ranks school almost exclusively by strength of research, ranks Davis way higher than TA&M? Please.

And since ARWU is compiled in Shanghai, I doubt it has a liberal bias.

And since ARWU is compiled in Shanghai, I doubt that it knows anything about US Colleges…

TA&M specialties:

Business: TA&M 33, UC Davis 40
Engineering: TA&M: 14, UC Davis 33

UC Davis specialties:

Biological Sciences: UC Davis 23, TA&M 68
Agricultural Economics: UC Davis 2, TA&M 33

All taken from US News except for AgEcon, taken from Loading...; because US News doesn’t rank AgEcon.

They’re peer schools that have different specialties.

Not to mention that I hope not to be the only one to see the connection Asia —> California.

I’d like to see if the rankings was compiled in Brazil. I bet Florida schools would rank much higher.

I never knew that you had to be in the US to rank an American university’s research output. :|

haha or if the rankings were in Russia, the University Of Alaska would be #1

My point indeed. Texas A&M is ovreall a much better school than UC-Davis.

Yes, but we are not going to take a ranking compiled by Asians when half of the student population in UC schools is Asian.

I disagree, I think UC-Davis is a better school to go for undergrad than Texas A&M for someone looking at the social and academic viewpoint subjectively…

^ USNWR doesn’t think so…

I suppose that’s also why they rank Austin above Davis. :|

heh, UC Davis was founded as Berkeley’s agricultural school. Imagine that - a liberal farm school beats the flagship public of Texas… :)
