Just how much of a hook is being first gen?

This may differ from school to school, but for Stanford, just how much do they value first generation status?

Is it on par with being an URM or a recruited athlete or lower? And if it's lower, is it a lot lower or only a tad bit lower, etc?

Any thoughts on this? I haven't really found any information on this. On these boards I've seen the stats posted by those accepted who were URMs, and on average these stats are generally much lower then for non URMs, but I haven't seen any posted stats for first generation students.

Pretty highly I think. I think your chances of admission has a first generation are higher than if your parents went to college. (according to statistics).

Wait is first gen, first generation in an American college, or college in general?

And does anyone know how stanford qualifies a student as first generation? My mom did not go to college and my dad only got an AA degree at a CC.

^That's not first gen. First gen is if both of your parents only graduated from high school at most.

Both of my parents did not even make it to high school.

What if my mom went on to a nursing school, not a college though, and my dad dropped out of college? Would I be first gen?

I'm also curious as to how highly Stanford thinks of first generation college students. This is a really good question.

bump (10 char)

What about being a first-generation immigrant from, say, Mexico?

Well, in that case, your URM status is a huge hook already.
First generation URM is golden. :] 80% in if you have decent stats to go along with.
