Son and I were having a discussion about Rochester, and he had one hesitation. He had heard from other high school students (and from incidental comments on this board) that Rochester is the kind of school where there is serious "grade deflation" that makes it extraordinarily difficult to get into med school.

Is this true, or an exaggeration? I know there are schools like Chicago that are known for lower grades. Med school admissions actually make allowances for a slightly lower gpa. How about Rochester?

Grade deflation is essentially what you said: a school where it's very difficult to make an "A" when compared with other schools of comparable rank and student bodies. Do you have or know a student at the school?

Son has strong credentials for Rochester and has always been a hard worker. His gpa and class rank show that. I don't think his dedication will change but we were curious about the "complaints" we were hearing.

However the med schools know that when a kid is applying there so no worries...

Also when he gets to college make sure he gets involved involved involved...
I went to a lecture by one of the deans of UR's med school and he said that he has rejected kids with near 4.0 averages and accepted kids with near 3.0 averages...
