I'm an in-state white male. I attend a high school in a rural part of the state. We generally have a few people accepted to UNC each year. My school isn't too competitive; our scores are pretty low. Last year, a white male (1730 on the SAT) and a white female (1680 on the SAT) got in. With all that being said, I have worked really hard in hopes of attending Carolina.

I feel like I wrote touching essays, and I'm sure that I got good recommendations.

It’s hard to chance since your school doesn’t offer many AP classes, but if you want to compare yourself to the other kids at your school then I think you’ve got a good shot. Ec’s look great and I think you’re borderline. Instate definitely is a great thing. Did you apply early action?

^^^^^carolina dude I think you’ll make it in. Your GPA is at that average weighted mark based on last year’s average of 4.47 (which is pretty competitive if you ask me) and you’re coming from a part of North Carolina where few people go to UNC, so I have to think that that will play a role in admissions, but again your GPA is on the mark so I do think you’re in!

Thanks for the reply, kitesurfer. I’m just worried about my SAT and only 2 AP courses. There’s one other guy that’s higher than me as far as grades and SAT that’s applying to UNC, but I’m second most qualified from my school.

I’m kind of in the same boat as far as SAT score goes. In fact, we have the same score. But at my school in eastern NC usually 15 people get accepted. This year there is a lot of competition among girls, but as far as guys go, I’m the most qualified. I have taken 5 AP classes, I’m the president of three clubs–including our National Honor Society chapter,–I’m a captain on the varsity swim team, and I have a ton of extracurriculars. But, just like you, I’m really only worried about my SAT score. I think you got a great shot though, good luck!

Good luck to you, too. I just hope we’ll be fine as far as our SAT scores. Does anyone know how much Boys’ State will help? Some people say it doesn’t really mean that much, but others say it means a lot. Input about that please…

I think you have a good shot - you shouldn’t worry too much about your SAT score because your GPA is really good. GPA is far more important than SAT to admissions. Also, the counselor statement tells the admissions officers about your school and what it offers, so they’re not going to put you up against anybody who had the ability to take like 6+ AP classes.
