Just making sure I'm answering this PROFILE question correctly..

The CSS Profile question PI-155B ::::::"Enter the income parent 1 earned from work in 2013 from his or her 2013 IRS Form 1040A, line 7. If your parents filed a joint return, enter only parent 1's portion of line 7. "

Do I understand correctly from the book "Paying For College without Going Broke" that you should also include 401K contributions to this? That you want the answer to this as high as possible? The book I have is old so I'm not sure if this has now been revised.

No, you should just enter the number from line 7 there. If pretax contributions to a 401K have been made, they are added back in later, on PI-190A:

You only put the amount contributed for that tax year, the total amount in deferred retirement plans is reported elsewhere.

When colleges assess your need, these untaxed dollars will be added back into your income. In general, the higher the income, the lower the need.

Thank you so much, entomom. I just had that one last question unanswered. Now we can submit the PROFILE. Thanks again!
