She told me that Penn was “the Public Ivy.” I was so shocked, but realized that she must have been booted out of her job and had sour grapes, but still…

What do you think she meant?

She told me that Penn was “the Public Ivy.” I was so shocked, but realized that she must have been booted out of her job and had sour grapes, but still…

What do you think she meant?

that they take anyone. hence, the "public" epithet.

obviously it was someone who doesn't have a great impression of the univ. I just got back from visiting for the third time and trust me, it's not "the public ivy" but most definitely the "social" one. whoooooaaaa hey day.

Definitely sour grapes. Besides, everyone knows that cornell is the public ivy:

just a note, the above was just all in good fun, and cornell is obviously a great school =)

Public Ivy is a group of public schools that consider themselves Ivy quality, like Rutgers: http://admissions.rutgers.edu/0102.asp

I think it was meant as a dig about some of the large intro lecture classes. Yeah, sour grapes - didn't get tenure.

That article is part funny and part sad. The interesting thing is that, for the intents and purposes of the Cornell student, statutory and endowed colleges are transparrent.

"I think it was meant as a dig about some of the large intro lecture classes."

Harvard has intro classes with 800 kids...so yeah, sour grapes.

iTunes,

Did you actually confirm that she didn't get tenure, or are you just assuming stuff?

Image Committee for Cornell?

Wow, that's sad....

She didn't say why she had moved; she had moved just this weekend, and she is now working in the public sector. She asked where I was going to live and I told her hopefully the Quad-she looked confused-and then told me the borders to NEVER stray beyond.

BTW-She went undergrad/grad to Hopkins which she went on and on about how great it is especially compared with Penn.

Actually, when I think about it, she is going to have a pretty tough time in the private sector if she doesn't understand how funding works.

You...assume a lot.

Hey guy in Japan

Why so angry?

Look, I think Cornell is a good school, as well. Why does everyone think every school schould be the next "Harvard?" If I wasn't attending Penn, I would be just as happy going to Cornell. Don't people realize that any school in the top 20 is STILL some of the best school's in the nation, if not the world? Not everyone can go to Harvard.

Did you get her name?

ipod,

Not angry at all. Just kinda confused how you're willing to assume so much.

JHU has the most mind-numbingly boring undergraduate life imaginable. The campus is boring, the area surrounding the campus is boring, and Baltimore is boring. The buildings are all in the same bland architectural style. All the great IR profs aren't actually there, but in the SAIS school in DC.

Definite sour grapes.
