Just Met Wheaton Rep

Got a favorable impression of the school; my only hesitation is its small size and remoteness. Is anyone else out there applying to Wheaton for Fall 2005? Anyone been to visit the campus recently? Thanks.

xtx, while the town of Norton is sleepy, and, as such, provides few distractions from studying during the week (wink, wink), I wouldn't characterize Wheaton as remote. Students have easy access to malls, Boston, Providence and the Cape on weekends.

My S and I attended the fall open house and found the campus to be attractive, in that New Englandy kind of way, and well maintained. My S recently did an overnight with one of the teams and came home convinced that this is the place for him.

Wheaton is the smallest (in terms of enrollment) of all the schools we visited and that doesn't seem to bother my S. He is very impressed with all the people he has met there so far, from admissions, to coaches, professors and students.

MSB, Thanks for your insight. You mentioned coaches--does your son plan to play a sport in college? What about transportation--would you send a car along with him to Wheaton?

He does - track. As far as a car goes, I wish I could afford to send him with one. <g> But in truth, we live very close by and one of his good friends (who does have a car) has already been accepted. From what I have seen at Wheaton and the other schools we have visited being without a car is not the end of the world. There are enough people on campus with cars that finding a ride is relatively easy. Because Wheaton is such a small school it does not offer private transportation. However, the school is on a bus line (free to students) that will take them to the Boston train in the next town.</g>

MSB, It sounds as though you've done your research and being close by is certainly an advantage. Did your son consider any other schools before deciding on Wheaton?

My son was looking for very specific things: A small, liberal arts college in the northeast, strong in political science and history, that had a track team. A "B" student, he applied to Wheaton, St. Lawrence University, Dickinson, Gettysburg, Muhlenberg and the University of Vermont. He also looked at, but did not apply to, Susquehanna, Franklin & Marshall, Ursinus, Syracuse, Ithaca and the University of Delaware.

MSB, My D has applied to Wheaton, but is not so clear on her educational goals. She has applied to enormous state universities, mid-sized privates, and LAC's. Good luck to your son! His LAC list is an impressive one.
