Just MT?

Hi guys! I applied ED1 to another school but if I don’t get in I plan to ED2 to Tisch. The issue is that I kind of just want to do the MT program, I don’t really want to get put into one of the acting studios. My question is whether or not it looks bad to just request MT at my audition- I heard it makes you look snobby. But the fact of the matter is, if I got into a bunch of other schools RD and Tisch for acting, I would rather go to my other schools. It’s just Tisch MT that I’m willing to commit to an ED. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

PS, I’m a boy- which I know makes a difference- who lives right outside of the city and has professional training.

Why not apply to Tisch regular decision then? That way you will know what all of your options are and perhaps a Tisch studio will look more appealing if you do not get placed in MT based on where else you are accepted. However, I don’t think it will look “snobby” to the auditors- but you may end up rejected because you limited yourself too much. As I understand it, there’s still a lot of decision-making that goes on once the acceptances are offered. In other words, i think they work on studio assignments after extending all of the acceptances, although obviously they’re going to be aware of who sings and who doesn’t. ED is really appropriate for those applicants who absolutely love a school and want to go there pretty much no matter what, as long as they can afford it, etc. the other element is that none of the performers can audition the first year , and after that, anyone can audition for any of the mainstage musicals as I understand it. Other Tisch parents will jump in here with additional info. Also, after your first two years, you can change studios. Other opinions?

Good advice, lightingmom! RD might be the right way to go for this candidate. Also, theater318, be careful about auditioning ED to 2 schools. If you are accepted to both, you are technically required to accept. Both. That would be rather tricky, yes? Early Decision is a commitment. Period.

I can give you some perspective on Tisch MT because my son was accepted into it ED. He wanted MT but he told them he would accept any of the studios. He was determined to go to Tisch and knew he would get good training in any of the studios. Also, after your 2 year primary studio training, you can move to a choice of advanced studios and he knew there was the chance of getting into the MT studio junior year.

Long story short, he got accepted to the MT studio. Stayed there for 5 semesters and loved it. Took an academic semester off. Then came back his senior year in the Film & TV studio to broaden his training. He still performs MT. Tisch has a lot of opportunities for music theater – in and out of the MT studio.

Food for thought. Good Luck!
