Up to spring 2010, I have less than 10 units, 2 W's, and a not-so-stellar GPA. I don't really want to go into it (and you don't really want to read it), but I'm pretty sure I could explain the situation well in one of the statements. Anyway, I'll take 6 units in the summer and then about 13 in the fall, which should give me a 3.7 GPA (assuming I make the grades) and 30 units in total. Add in my AP credits and I'll have 56 units when they read my application.

I want to apply to UCLA as an English major but I don't think I'm competitive enough. Apart from my average GPA (since it's an impacted major), after fall, I would have only completed 2/6 prerequisites, though my IGETC would be fulfilled.

Could I still maybe get accepted or nah? If it's hopeless, I don't want to waste time and money taking the LA prerequisites (I'd rather just TAG UCI). But, well, I'd love to attend LA so I'm praying it's not too screwed up yet. I don't think I look horrible, but "okay" doesn't really cut it, I'd assume.

So yeah, any feedback would be great.

Oh, and I attend a community college in California.

Thanks!

P.S. Opinions on Berkeley? I figure if LA turns out reachable, I'll try Cal just in case.

i think with only 2 out of 6 pre-reqs completed, you better tag at uci and forget about la/cal. also, i hope you know that to tag, atleast for ucsd, u need to have 30 sem/45 quarter units done AT ur ccc. aka no AP units count, and they must be done BEFORE you apply. i would double check with uci tho. good luck!

If you’re trying for UCLA, you’re gonna need to do all your pre-reqs and get your GPA up to that magic 3.5 number. Combined my grades from SBCC and WVC right now are only about 3.22, but remember I have well over 80 units and have been going for 3 years now and that not all of those units are UC-transferrable sooooo… I could be higher but yeah. Try the TAP, you may have to spend another 2 years in college if you definitely want UCLA but you could get in if you do that. Barring that… go with what redoplease says and Tag and UCI. You may also have some luck with UCSB (I think) but I’m not familiar with their transfer protocol for English majors. What I would do is write down a small list of the UCs you want to goto and check the assist (if you haven’t – I’m honestly assuming you have though) and just check off the ones you can complete the pre-reqs for. Arguably for English this is easier than for the sciences (Like I can get into UCLA or UCSB adding a Calc class, maybe even UCSD, but at Berkley I would have to spend a 5th year completing Science/Bio courses). But yeah, I’m rambling here… hopefully some of it’s helped though, good luck!

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

I’m unsure about the UCI TAG now because some people say the AP credits count and others say they don’t. If I can’t find a definite answer online I’ll just talk to a counselor at school Monday (summer school, yay :D).

The only UC’s I’ve looked at are LA, B, SB, and I. Everything pretty much checks out with SB and Irvine and I do plan to TAG them (as long as the 30 units things is fine).

I guess worst case scenario is staying another year, although I don’t know how much I can take of this process :(

@aninstance

30 units? I dunno for English again, but Psych majors have to complete 60 units to transfer. You may want to check that too lol. Good luck!

Lol I mean to TAG UCI, you need at least 30 units when you apply (unsure if you can use AP’s to help though). Of course, by spring next year, I’ll need at least 60. My current class plan has me finishing with 72 (I know only 70 go over) so I feel okay I guess haha
Thanks!

For some classes at UCLA I know AP grades could be used to replace lower division courses in certain subjects, so it should work at UCI and English might be able to net you 1-2.

Net me 1-2?

Hey you know what, the UC Transfer website says:

Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) credit can also be used to satisfy the 60 transferable units.

So it should make sense I can use my AP credits right now… which gives me over 30 when I’m applying.

well okay, 1-2 classes I mean lol! Depends on how many AP English classes you took. I don’t know if it covers the IGETC but… it works for everything else.

Oh haha Well I took both lit and comp… and I’ve tried looking at the LA AP credit page but it just makes my head hurt lol My counselor had this really easy paper for like all the UC’s or something and I just used that. Not exactly sure what classes I’d get at LA, but uh, not very confident I’d get there so =/

i think you need to prioritize. what is more important attending UCLA or having english as your major?

If UCLA is more important there are other majors that are not as competitive as english to get into, such as comparative literature. you could also enter as a philo major or any other major that interests you and just end up minoring or double majoring in english.

Both are important, but having English as my major would be the priority. That said, I definitely thought about compromising with comparative literature. However, the ASSIST articulation agreement is coming up… blank. I tried a bunch of random CCC’s and still it won’t show equivalent classes =/

*I have seen the UCLA website, though. Am trying to understand it… lol

That… might be a bit odd, talk to your counselor and see what they can do maybe?

I was going to, but then I figured it out lol And well, okay, um, I have to be proficient in another language, which… =/ back to square one.

If you’re looking for easy in general, do Spanish. If you like a fun challenge, do Japanese. If you like fun, do Latin

Comp. Lit requires foreign language, and i believe only two lower division literature classes. since most ccc don’t have “comp lit” departments, english literature courses(the ones that would fulfill the english major requirements) fulfill the lower division literature classes.

For UCLA, once you’re in you can generally switch into any major as long as it is not in another school, or one of two or three majors that don’t allow you to switch over once you transfer (psych, business/econ, and I think another one).

The link above shows the majors that have numbers next to them, the numbers let you know of the restrictions. The english major does not have restrictions, meaning you could switch into it assuming you apply for a different major and get into that department for UCLA. However, what it will mean for you is that you run the risk of being at UCLA an extra year, because the English department won’t officially change your major until you have all the pre-requisites done(meaning you’ll have to do lower division work at UCLA if you don’t have it completed before transferring in).

I don’t think I’d feel comfortable reading and discussing in another language. And the prospect of staying another year is a bit depressing.

I was wondering… why don’t people just try American Literature instead? Looking at the UCLA website, the prerequisites look identical (okay not identical, but they’re similar). I can’t seem to find much information on the major, but I did want to pursue a career in publishing, so i think it’d be useful. Not to mention, I don’t really feel a need to change to English.

Crazy things have been done. . .I started CCC with 9 units in Jan. 2009, busted out at CCC and got accepted to Cal in April 2010. My G.P.A. to start was 2.86 (classes I took a few years ago) but I got straight A’s in everything I took and my G.P.A became 3.9 transferable. Crazy things can happen in a year. Oh yeah I also signed a tag in fall to Davis and got accepted in Nov. (with tag).

If I can turn around and pull that off I think anyone can. Good luck! It might seem impossible but it is definitely achievable.

@flwrgrl

Oh absolutely, usually I’ll have As, Bs, a C and then a bombed class from “who gives a f***-ism” on a 14-18 Unit semester… This time around it was 16 units/5 classes and got straight As. Granted some of these were easy classes and I got a little lucky. But if you can stop the depression/bleh-ness (sophmoritis?) then you can do some great things.

Wow flwrgrl, that’s amazing haha Aw Itachirumon you give me hope for improvement lol I’m more of a straight B but hopefully I can get those consecutive A’s!

At this point I really want to try apply to LA with the American Lit major. I’ve looked at the stats and if I do well, my GPA will be higher than the average GPA of accepted students (3.45 for 2010). I’m just hoping my 2/6 prerequisites won’t kill me :/
