Well, my son finally made a decision. He was accepted to all the schools he applied to and decided to attend UB in the fall.

The highly regarded engineering department made it a great choice (and the cost compared to privates and OOS publics is a plus.) (Honors college too and merit award!)

We just paid the deposits on line. How do they contact you about housing requests? How soon should we expect something? Thanks.

I paid my deposit on Friday as well. I was thinking of getting an apartment, but it seems too late, so I may request a single or double room in Governors.

crazed- If he’s in Honors won’t he be housed in Governor’s? Or is he opting out of honors housing?

laser - If you’re not one of the special groups housed in Gov, you’re probably too late for a room assignment there. Somewhere on their website they recommend a Feb/March deposit date to get a room there. But good luck!

sk8rmom-
You would think that they would reserve enough housing in Governor’s for honors freshmen since it is offered, however, they do not. They run out of housing for honors.

A student called the house a couple of weeks ago (a courtesy call prior to enrolling) and I asked about housing. She is an honors student that had requested Governor’s freshmen year but was placed on South campus anyway.

We’ll fill out the request form when we get it and hope he gets a good dorm, or better yet, a good roommate!!

UB really needs to do a better job alerting folks about the demand for on-campus housing. Housing really does get snapped up very early, and if UB is still under consideration, you may find it worthwhile to send in the housing deposit immediately, just in case, even if you or your student hasn’t made the final decision on UB. My D (current freshman) put in her housing paperwork in mid-Feb last year and fortunately, got her requested single in Ellicott. But we heard from many families that past mid-March it really became a “fingers-crossed” situation.

Well I got the email from the housing people today. I am about to update my housing preferences. Any ideas? I am hoping for a spacious room, I don’t mind doubles. I am a CS Major. I am still planning on filling out an apartment application just in case.

laserfox – are you exploring off-campus apartments? Unless you are a transfer student, you won’t be eligible for on-campus apartment housing. From the UB Housing website:

Undergraduate Student Applicants
Undergraduate applicants must have four semesters in University at Buffalo residence halls by the start of the lease/agreement (summer sessions are not included).
Local students and students transferring to UB that do not meet the residency requirement must have completed at least 60 credit hours of course work by the start of their lease/contract. (Advanced Placement credits not included).

The older students seem to like South Campus alot - more downtown things going on, easy transportation to North, metro access, restaurants, shops, etc. Med, architecture, nursing, and soon pharmacy schools are all on South but many other majors live there as well. It’s about a 10 minute ride on the UB bus to North, about the same as walking from Ellicott to the spine.
